Hello again! I have been trying to get my first post added to your forum, and I had a lot to learn to do this! so, here I go--This is about the 15th pastel I have ever done. Its on Mi Tientes paper, grey, and on the very textured side--which was an accident--I ment to work in the other side! but I went ahead for the experiance. I was trying to show the light in this scene as more the subject-- Thanks all- |

| You have done a great job on the lighting! The cat appears proportional and lifelike. The only thing that bothers me is the stump or wood post he sits on, that looks a little too unfinished or "thown in" if you know what I mean, and the lines and color are too close to that of the cat and it distracts my eye. But, wow, for just begining and doing it on the rough side (I can't do it makes me nuts) very well done! Do you have experience in another medium? |

| I agree with Anna about the color of the stump. I would make it more in the greyish tones. I think, also, that the shadow behind the cat's haunch is too dark and too severe. Do you think? Your background of the trees looks very nice to me. I agree that the lighting on the cat is done very nicely. Gene |

Hi Ida,
Beautiful work. You've captured the light and personality very well. And your colors are stunning. I love the blues in the background - they work so well with the oranges to make this an eye-catching piece. I agree with others about the stump needing some work. I like the idea of graying it a little as I find it distracting that the colors are so close to the cat's (oranges). But I wouldn't lose the beautiful color variations you've obtained in it. The other things that stand out for me are the front of the body (torso) and the end of the tail. The body looks a little distorted and very angular. My eyes keep going to the strong light line that goes from the back to the left leg. While this line has depicted the light very well, it seems severe and possibly is causing the cat's torso to look a bit distorted. The tail-end (black portion) blends too much with the cat and looks flat - needs to show some 3-dimensionality with shading from it on the cat's body. For this being only your 15th pastel - congratulations! Your work is beautiful and I'm lookng forward to seeing more.

I think you have accomplished what you were going for with this piece. The light stands out. Very well done. You have got some good critique here too on improving your work in the future. Keep it up! Jim

Nice, Nice, Nice! Love the background and the lighting on the cat!!!!! I also think that stump should be darkened or changed as far as color and I would bring the tip of the tail into the shadow that is under his belly, just to show the tail better. I questioned what it was at first look...I thought it was part of the cat's haunch. Also, the fore leg looks a liitle sckewed? Is it that the shadow is too dark? Maybe a little detail of the leg should be shown in darker colors toi give it a true shape? Personally I like the dark on his haunch. Just my thoughts... Mike |

Thanks for all you said--so very nice. Yes, I do watercolors, and love it. and I draw a lot. A very nice lady gave me all her pastels recently, just out of the bleu--I was so surprized00didn't really know her even. bur she had seen some of my w/c and looked me up. She said she was finished and wanted me to have them, and loads of paper, too, and Oils, and even arclyic's--Yes, it was a good day for me! She had a lot of gumbacher's, and rembrants, and Nu-pastels, and Winsor & Newton's--Since then have bought senniliers, and Terry Ludwig's and Art Spectrum's--I guess I am hooked! |

Yes, a very nice lady - and she knew what she was doing - you seem to be a natural at pastels. And yes, it looks like you're hooked. Not to encourage you to spend more money on pastels, but what the heck, hee hee. Have you tried Great American pastels? They are my favorite. What do you think of Terry Ludwig? I haven't tried them yet and was thinking about it. Thanks.

| I love the ludwigs! I especially love the darks that set is outstanding. There is a purple he has that is so dark it looks black but if you need black it has a rich color that really sets off other colors. |

Hi Anna,
I was just thinking this morning that I wish I had a pastel so dark it looks black. (I'm in the process of painting my black & white cat). Could you tell me the name of the color? Thanks.
