Hello,

Here is my finished portrait, done with Shcminke Soft Pastels.

Obviously the photo is not as crisp/detailed, but you get the idea.

Thanks!

This seem like a drawing to me. Now, if I were you I would continue on with it and paint in a multiple of different values and get some more paint on there. The subject matter is beautiful, naturally, and if I can remember your first sketches of the mother and toddler, you captured their expressions very well. But I'd just like to see you really "paint" this. I know a lot of people think that pastel is simply for drawing, but I love to see fully developed paintings with pastel. It is such a rich medium and so easy to blend and make beautiful colors together..................Just my thought............Gene

I agree with Gene.....although I LOVE the faces.....there is no color intensity. I realize that there are a lot of light areas in the picture. I would focus on the skintones and the background orange....really darken them up and make them stand out more.

Hello Gene and Jess,

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Actually, I used many layers of pastel to get a "soft" effect, which is what the recipient wanted. Unfortunately, you can't see the contrasting colors/shadows in the photo I took. I love sharp contrast too, but not for this portrait. (in keeping with the overall warmth)

It is definitely a soft portrait with both colors and lines.

Anyway, the woman I painted this for is very pleased with the pastel painting and will be presenting this to her daughter tomorrow for her grandchild's Christening!

Have a great weekend!
