When Dani was two years old I took her to the river for the first time. She was very intent on discovering the hidden treasures under the rocks and had a wonderful time getting wet while her older brother was swimming.

People ask if I copied a photograph. Well, kind of. Let's see . . . Using five different photos I changed her position, turned her face, changed the shapes and locations of the rocks, changed the color of the water, changed the way the light hit both Dani and the water . . . yeah, I guess you could say I 'copied' a photograph.

Boy, that picture didn't come out very well, did it? I guess the file is too small and that's what makes it all blurry and fuzzy. What is the best size file to send so it isn't too big?

Wow, that made a big difference in the quality of the photo. I have a hard time photographing pastels. I put on on the Paint-off section only to find out it came up looking blurry.........anyway, on my monitor it looks that way........... This is a lovely painting. I like the way you handled the shadows in her body and her hair in particular. The water is done very well also. I love this. It makes me want to get going on some of my own. Thanks for sharing.................Gene

Thank you all for your nice comments!! As usual, I see several things I'd wished I would have done differently, but don't we all end up second guessing ourselves? Sometimes I cringe when I see something hanging on a wall that I did several years ago. It can be one of those "What was I thinking??" moments, but I guess that is all part of the learning process.

Am just starting on a portrait of a little three-year-old Asian girl that I am quite excited about. I hope I can get it done in time to enter in the Pastel 100. The deadline is September 1st, isn't it?

Truly beautiful piece of work. The child is so life like. The skin is wonder, the water is shrimming in just the right way. You did a great job. scochran

The way you've developed skin tone and detail on your grandaughter is
just short of miraculous to me! I still have not been able to figure out how to
get such razor sharp definition and edges on subjects. If this is a secret you could
share, it would be greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you all for your kind comments.
Jim, I make good use of the sharp edges of Nu-Pastel sticks (break a lot into small, sharp pieces) and the Carbothello pastel pencils. Tried using Prismacolor, but they are too waxy for me, except in very small lines. I also do some back painting, if that's what it's called, buy redoing the background color to sharpen the foreground.

Thank you Sandy for the tips! The Carbothello pencils sound interesting.
I also have to get away from the tendency to try and blend everything.
Thanks again,
Jim

Jim, blending is my middle name!! When I took a workshop from Maggie Price, I accused her of using the sanded paper just so we blenders couldn't without rubbing holes in our fingers. She laughed and said it was a good way of learning to loosen up . . . and she was right. I have left more than a few drops of DNA on Wallis paper along the way.
