Sorry I haven't been active. I have been lurking. These are my first two pastels. They are both done entirely in NuPastels on Mi-Tientes paper. The deer is 24x18 (I think) and the sunset? is 9x12. I appreciate any help/comments.

Hi Seyah...

I love the first one. The grain of the paper is really visible in the middle of the water. I'm doing some colored pencil on the Mi-Tientes paper right now too......and Ron suggested that I use the BACK instead of the front of the paper. I havn't seen any of the paper grain visible. Have you tried using the back? Regardless.....I like that picture very much and especially love the colors in the sky.

The deer picture is nice too. It looks a little flat between the eyes and nose....maybe more shadows or definition there to make his face more defined. The jawline on the left comes up right under his eye.....if it were extended over to the other side of the eye (as-is the jawline under the right eye) it would make the face seem more full and lifelike. I like the detail work on the ears and antlers and body fur. Very nice!

Thank You for the compliments. I might try the back because the grain showing up so much is starting to bug me. The grain on that white paper is alot different than the grain on the gray paper I did the deer on. I see what you are saying about the deer. It just doesn't look right. Maybe I'll try and rework it.

I also use the back side of the Canson paper, but I recently shipped a painting to my son that I had done on the textured side, and I find that it really suited that painting for some reason. When that waffle-y look appears under the painting it sort of reminds me of the canvas that you sometimes see showing throught on oil paintings. I think depending on the subject, it can be quite effective. I think it is Paul LaVeille(or something like that) who does his portraits on that side of Canson. On your landscape painting, I think I would soften the edges of the lake quite a bit. Also, on your dark black shoreline, I would suggest that you use the side of your pastel and take some various shade of green (keep them dark if you want) and just add texture and a bit of color, to sort of suggest grasses, etc. Just a thought. Keep on painting. And have fun with it. I love pastel, don't you?...................Gene
