Shortly after completed the my first pastel painting in years it was time to try it once more.  The painting titled Winter's Moorage (2004) was difficult to get through as the paper and pastels seemed to work against each other.  Had to really give myself time mentally to adjust connecting with subject as well as the medium and material.  Not sure if others have experienced this problem after being away from the drawing board?

Also, I find that the photograph picked up too much of the texture of the paper while washing out certain values and colors.  Will have to spend more time on understanding my camera's functions and how to adjust things for proper view of the painting.  If the hyperlink to the image doesn't work let me know.

For me, the water is fantastic and the moorage docks fit in very well. I find the boat over distracting and pulling my eyes to the left a lot. The back of the cabin on the boat looks like the perspective is pushed to far and makes it look a little funny.

That how I feel about it as well as. It was a smaller drawing that I was use too doing in the past. At times when I've been away from the painting with pastels I often do small studies to get my eye and hand cooridnation back before diving deeper into a larger painting. This small drawing is still sitting in storage awaiting funds for framing.

After a 25 year hiatus from the arts (a BA in Studio Art), I, like you, jumped back in with a different medium. I spent the first two years drawing more than painting in pastel. Then followed workshops and books. Finally after four years, I feel it is coming together. The best connecting to subject and medium occurred when painting outdoors. Coming from a background in figurative painting, I applied the skills I learned years ago to the real landscape. Pastel is a very vibrant medium. Try your hardest not to blend as that dulls its effect. As in oils, working from dark to light seems to produce the best results. After that, it's knowing your values and the cools and lights in the hue. You can mix pastel, but that will gray the color. Layering is much more effective. All of this leads to buying a LOT of pastels in different values and hues.

As for the current painting, I question the rendering of the boat. I'm not sure whether it's the fact there is only one and the buck stops there, whether it's the perspective, or the rendering. Without something to create a contrast, I think the painting would be lacking. The mood of the water and the docks is very good. You wouldn't want to lose that. Hope this helps.
