I haven't posted in pastel in a while.  This the month's challenge - I chose the Bombay cat as it looks like a cat I used to have.  3"x4"  C/C welcome.

heatherm...............this is great, love that saucy little face. This is another medium I find to be a challenge, but you rival those wonderful cp painters with this one. Well done.  I'm also amazed at the detail you get in such tiny pieces!

Hi Heather,
Those eyes are amazing!
They just draw you into the painting.
Your use of highlights on the cat make
it stand out just enough to distinguish it from
your dark background. I am then drawn to the flowers
and realize the detail you put into something so small. Amazing!

Yeah....what Jim said Great painting Heather. The cat looks wonderful and the flowers really make a nice addition to the composition.

Heather, you have been so prolific of late, much to my delight! Another little beauty. I love the way you included the pansies in the grassy foreground. Great job................Gene

Oooh thank you so much everyone! You have all made my day. The way I get detail is: VERY sharp pencils for eyes and fine lines, and VERY fine brushes. Plus a lot of patience doing tiny tiny strokes carefully to make sure that each one is exactly where it is supposed to be. I just reallized, looking at this again, I FORGOT THE WHISKERS! Duh. Will put them on, though in a photo they wouldn't stand out very much anyway (I am great at rationalizing)

Thank you Anna, I think I am getting better at grass in pastels. It has been the bane of my existence, so I keep doing it to get better.

Heather,
I like your little painting. I don't know how you work so small with pastels.
Is this done on dark gray paper?
What does "the month's challenge" mean?

Hi Ron,
Thanks for popping in! The paper is a soft black, plus the sanded texture reflects light. It is Canadian paper that an artist friend of mine gave me to try. I prefer Wallis or ArtSpectrum to it though, they are more sturdy.

The challenges are from the Artist Groups I belong to on e-Bay. They are either a week or month's challenge. They give a subject and we are to paint it (only if we want to) no prizes or anything, just a fun way to get our "muse" working. We also put the challenge in the title of the painting to draw attention to the particular group by collectors who look for them. I just finished another cat challenge of an Ocicat. I didn't even know what it looked like so researching it was fun too.

Heather:

Beautiful black cat on a dark background, and one can make out its form, great work on this. And also, again I am drawn to its eyes which are very expressive as well. One thing though, I do not see any whiskers. Is it because they are black or the painting is too small to show?

Frank,
Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your comments. You are correct, I forgot to put whiskers on, they are there now. I noticed it when after I posted. Duh! to me.

I should have read your message about the whiskers before making comment on it. I guess "oops" happened once in a while when we are immersed in interesting work and forgot some small detail (missed by a whisker so to speak :-))))

Hi Heather
You do such an excellent job of cats. Like gene said. I like the way you always add a little something to finish the picture. The panies to complement the black cat. It is like a bow on a gift.
There I new pan pastels I seen on a video clip from pastel journel.
I did buy some Sargent Art Pastels. I do like how pastels blend so easily.
It is hard to see whiskers on a black. Smiles. I like you work.

Thank you Frank, I do "oops" all the time.

Anna, thank you for your welcome comments, appreciate them.

Johanna, thank you, I love doing cats, all kinds, thanks for the "out" on the whiskers, but I did suggest them slightly. I just finished another of just the eye of the cat, the daughter of my son-in law's niece (figure that one out) she gave me permission to use a photo she took. I am beginning to think we should have a forum for miniatures, but not really enough of us do them. I hesitate to put all the ones I do here as I am doing so many.

Thanks Gene, I appreciate the encouragement. What I could do is post more than one in the same post, that way I wouldn't crowd the listings up. Maybe once a week or so.
