If you ever have the opportunity to attend an IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies) convention, do it! I just returned from an intense one day workshop with Richard McKinley and a demo on abstract landscape painting by Ann Templeton. Words of wisdom that came from each: Before you start decide what you choose to communicate. The darkest mass (where 1 is black and 10 is white) in landscape painting is 6.5 on the value scale. Simultaneous contrast--an essential component of every piece of work. Beginning painters make it more difficult than it is-forget those little nit-picky things. Less is more. Value, value, value--get it right so the painting doesn't fall apart (same as simultaneous contrast advice) Light travels toward you, no matter where you are. Four basic landscape values in abstraction-- the lightest value is the sky, don't look for it anywhere else. The next lightest value is the flat plane (reflects the light), no matter how large or small it is. The lightest dark value is the vertical plane, and the darkest dark is the tree(s) Abstracting the landscape--1 dominant texture, 1 dominant shape, 1 dominant value, 1 dominant line direction. Two books a landscape painter should have: Art Spirit Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting. SL Sorensen

Great info! The Pastel Journal editors were there, too! Anne Hevener talks about Richard's landscape workshop as well on our Pastel Journal blog, and Sarah Strickley also shares some images from the trade show floor.
