I've been working on faces lately and especially in pastel. This is one I just finished of my daughter Katie. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Jim

Wow ,this is very dramatic and almost perfect. A few things to note; if you draw (an imaginary) axis line down the center of her face, you will see that the point of her chin is off center just a wee bit. The eyes are also a little bit out of alignment. Overall, a very nice work!

Hi Materese,
Thank you very much for your comments.
I see what you mean. I will remember the axis
when I paint portraits in the future. Amazing how
you can forget about a simple thing like that. I'm to
much about eye balling things.
Thanks again,
Jim

Wow Jim you have come a long way. I agree with the axis thing, but no big deal when it is as beautiful as this. You have been doing a lot of work lately and it shows. Well done! Your daughter must love it.

Thanks Heather,
Thanks for getting me into pastels. It's an amazing medium.
Yes she does love it, but I'm keeping it. I did it for me. I'm
eventually going to do one of all four kids. Thank God there are
no grand-kids yet!

Jim, Very nice! Your work keeps getting better and better! You have a wonderful style when you are doing your own thing. I love this modern looking slightly reminiscent of Modigliani style... the tilt.. the closeup.. and the lovely glow of the skintone. Well done!

How big is this piece? It is very dramatic piece. It reminds me of an movie poster.
Materese , is very knowageble in her observations. I am happy she is a part of this group!

Hi Anna,
Thank you very much! I'm really happy at the way this turned out.
Faces have always been a mental block for me. I guess you just have to
keep doing them an sometime you get to be good at it.
Thanks again, oh and looking foward to the group painting thing.

Thank you Jess, Leon and Shana,
Shana it's really quite small. It's only 8 X 10.
Katie is very happy with it.

Great work, Jim.
Man, you must paint full time. You've been turning out a lot of very nice pastel paintings.
I'm wanting to learn pastels, but I'm freezing up every time I try to get started. Fear of failure I guess.
Do you have any suggestions?

Yeah Ron, fail.
I mean that in the best way possible.
Sometimes you just gotta do it. It's never perfect.
It's always off somehow. Most of the imperfections only
you see. Or someone who is very anal. You have the talent to
draw what you see. Thats a whole level above most people.
There's an artist in the latest watercolor magazine that says, "I
draw real slow , but then I paint fast. I guess it has to do with getting
out of your comfort level. Step off the edge and see what happens. In
our world, what's the worst that can happen? Whatever it is, in most cases
you can fix it. I think my turning point with pastels was realizing how well colors
blended. I know that sound simple, but it was from that point that I started getting
bolder and bolder in what I wanted to try. I don't know if any of this will help, but I hope
I did a little good.

Hi Materese,
Oh boy, I got your message with that out of context quote of mine. I am very sorry if I
offended anyone with that. That was not meant as a poke at anyone who
comments on my paintings. I appreciate everyone I get. That was more to help Ron
to not worry about any derogatory or mean comments he might be afraid of getting
on any of his work. Not that he has to worry about that. That statement was meant for
real nit picking of a piece that really doesn't need it. Your comments on my work were right
on the mark and I respect that very much. In fact I look foward to comments from anyone on
any level of artistry.I hope you can see it in the way it was intended.

Thanks, Jim,
I appreciate your comments and your advice is well taken.
Nobody starts out perfect and the purpose of this forum is to give help and encouragement to others. That's the purpose of posting our work. I know I have received some very helpful comments on some of my work. I'm just having a hard time getting cranked up to do pastels.
Thanks again, for the support.

Ron
