This is my first attempt at a bird using pastels. It's not in the same league as J Ramesh, but I would appreciate your comments on this attempt.
Thanks,
Jim

| Jim, Wow, your Warbler is great! I do find the background a little distracting though, and it takes away from this wonderful little bird, especially the white and lines behind the head, the left side/top. Maybe just blend that out and leave lines and details in the foreground? But, wow, you are really getting good at this! |

Hi Anna, Thanks alot! I see what you mean about the lines behind the head upper left. I took and softened and blended them so they are not so stark. It does look a lot better. Thanks for the tip! Jim

Nice form and colors Jim - Just wonder about the black area under the bird not quite sure what is being depicted there ?
Overall a nice, colorful presentation

| Very nicely done. It must look better after the softening you did around the head. The bird looks like it is asking "what are you looking at?". Love that expression in the eyes.. |

Hi Frank, Thanks for your comments. The dark area under the bird is a shadow. At least that's what it's suppose to be. Jim

| Jim, I agree. This is nice. I do agree with Anna about blending the background down a bit. Oh, I just re-read this page and see that you have already taken that suggestion. I love the soft grays in the bird's body. Nice job.........Gene |

Hi Heather, Thank you very much! Yeah, bird with attitude. I'm going to attach a copy of the photo I worked from. I really liked the background. I don't think I represented it very well here though. Let me know what you think. Jim

Hi Jim, You did the background very well using the photo as a reference, but your background highlights are a little too bright all over. Just need an overall softening by dragging pastel stick lightly over it (in the shadow color needed) and then blend slightly (with saran or glad wrap around your finger) and you will be all set. The reason the dark is not understood is that the shadow image is a little flatter than you have and is smaller than the bird. Once you said what it is, becomes very obvious. I think you represented it very well, I prefer the look in your bird's eye. |

Thanks Heather, I appreciate the help. It does look better with the highlights not so bright. I darkened the shadow area also. If you notice, on top of the birds eye is a white line in the photo. I don't know what it is but sometimes in certain areas you just can't ad anymore color. This is one of those spots. It won't take the white line I'm trying to put in. Can anything be done about that? I've meant to ask this question before but just kept forgetting to. Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim: My solution with reworking an area that won't take more color is to spray a fixative on that area, after it dry you can add color or rework it easily. Just buy a can of pastel/pencil fixative and try it out - follow the direction and you'll be there.

Hi Frank, Hey thanks for the tip. I have fixative and I tried what you suggested. It works! Sometimes the simple things are the hardest to figure out. Jim

Jim, I think the bird is very nice, I think the background is nice, just not together. They seem to be to seprate ideas. Hold that background idea in your head for a more abstract bold painting. scochran |

| Hi Jim..........I'm glad you posted the photo of the bird. You did a very nice job with the background, but again, I think you just need to soften it a bit to allow your bird to be the "star". No, I am not working on a thing. I had foot surgery about three weeks ago and still need to have my foot above my heart, so for me, that means lying flat on my back. I can't seem to sit up and get my foot high with any degree of comfort. So, I am not even doing much sketching. Have tried, but I can't seem to use my arm with any dexterity, and I don't draw very well with just my hand! ....Glad to see you are back at pastels.Keep them coming. Gene |

Hi Jim, Looking at the photo I see some blue on the bird. I would add some blue to the painting to make it stand out a little better. This is very nice painting. Thanks for sharing your work. Anna. |
