Ron, I am working on a piece(a surprise for a sister-in-law of her deceased husband from her daughter), really a family favor, but the hard part is the photo she wants to use is an air brushed typed from the 50's. The skin tones on this piece is very much like your Barney. I would to get similar look in this piece, can you give me some pointers? Thank you, scochran |

Hi Shana, I am a beginner in pastels but I will tell you what I can. I got the reference photo of Barney from the Internet. The colors were so bad that they were useless. I think the medium gray colored pastel paper that I used was a good choice. For the skin tones I used a flesh color with some browns for the shadows and white for the highlights. I think the look that you are referring to is caused by a lot of blending with my fingers which produced a soft effect. That's about all I can tell you. If you could post what you've done so far, maybe some of the experienced pastelists can offer some suggestions. |

Thank you for your advice, your work doesn't look like a beginners. When I get to a point that I want people to see, I will be sure and post, but right now it is at that ugly baby stage. I am usally very strong with color. I am just afraid I will over power this piece and that soft look will be gone. This piece is more like a sweet memory for the person it is going to be given to. scochran |
