This is from another photographer I know. He lives in San Diego and takes fantastic photos of the ocean. Waves and surfers being his specialty. This pastel is one taken from  a photo he called V Wave. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Jim,
I can feel the spray, especially today, it is 7 degrees here with howling wind and the outgoing tide has white caps! Even with the warm colors in the sky you have captured the coldness of the water. Very well done.

Thanks Gene! Very nice of you to say that.
I'm sorry to hear your laid up for a bit, but glad that
you can still visit us and comment. I went in Friday for foot surgery to
have an ingrown toenail removed. Yeah, I know ugh! Just limped for a
couple of days though.
Thanks again,

Thanks Anna,
I've just got a lot of people wanting stuff done lately.
I have a friend now who wants a dragon done. Not a
chinese dragon, but old world Lord of the Rings type.
I need to find some reference material on this.
You mentioned being prolific, but not as much as some
new people on here. Someone named Crystaleyes, and Artnut
must have put up 10 new paintings a piece! I really don't see the benefit
to putting up all that work at one time. It's nice to see different peoples work
and have the time to comment and look at differing styles. When someone floods
the forum with work, even if it is excellent work I think it dilutes the effectivness and
purpose for this forum. All that work put up at one time doesn't give other people the
time to stay on the forums front page very long. It's like typing in all capital letters. THERE SCREAMING AT
US!!!! These people don't seem to think it necessary to comment on other peoples work either.
Sorry for the soap box message, but I've grown very fond of this forum and many of the people here I call
friends. Maybe just a little overprotective.
Thanks again Anna,
Jim

This piece reminds me of the Japans wood blocks that Van Gogh was so very fond of, your in good company with your choice of subject matter. Beatuiful used of warm colors in the sky. scochran

Thank you Shana,
I'm humbled by your comparison. Are you new on the forum?
What mediums do you use? I would look foward to seeing some
of your work.

This is a great start. Think variety. Spend more time outside studying color. If you closely observe the water, you will begin to see a lot of colors in the whites of the waves. Try painting this picture with any white.

Yes, I am new. I haven't had any luck at getting my work to post. I have tried but it takes a long time, then it comes up that the page cannot be displayed.
I generally work in pastels, but I have been playing in oils again lately a little watercolors sometimes, maybe even a acrylic, I jump around a lot. You know what they say about being master at none. That is me. I see something I like and I have to try it. I am really looking forward to the feed back on my work. I need it.

Hi Shana,
I know what you mean. I never did watercolor or pastels until I joined the forum. There are so many
excellent artists here who are willing to guide you and help with ideas that it made it easy to jump into
something I knew nothing about. As far as posting your work it could be a couple of different things that
keep you from getting your art work up. You seem to have already done it by posting your avatar. If you have dail-up that could be why your computer is saying this page cannot be displayed. It may be timing out
on you. Are you having a problem getting your work down to 100 kb's? If so try downloading a resizing program called irfenview. It's free and easy to use. You can get it at www.irfenview.com. Once you have it
you can put your paintings that you have pictures of on your computer and size them down to 100 kb's in
minutes. Rename them and save them in a folder you can use to go to while on the forum. I hope this helps.

Hi edm,
Did you mean without any whites? I guess I could try that. I'm not sure how you can get reflected light to
look bright without using white, but then I've never tried either. Just use very light shades of other colors
then right? Are you a pastel artist? I would love to see some of your work. Do you have any examples of
what your talking about?
Thanks again for your input,
Jim

Hi Jim,

If you use light tints rather than white, you can get some "pop" by using colors that are complementary or split complements.

Try it and have some fun!

Ed
