I like this composition. And I like your shadows in the mother boar. I think the baby needs more shape to his body, though. What kind of paper are you using? Sanded? I ask, because I see those little specks of paper showing through. They don't always appear on the actual paper, but when photographing the work they sometimes show up more than I like. Maybe you don't mind that, though. I never like to see the canvas showing through on an oil painting, either. Just my personal preference, apparently. I think I would lighten the area just above the baby's snout. Maybe make it more blue like the surrounding water. I think then his snout would stand out a bit better. This is just a nosy question...........why do you put the date on the front of the painting? I always feel that the date on the front could "date" the painting in an undesirable way. You know, a potential customer could think, "that's an old painting". Not that that would make it less desirable to a real art critic, but I think it could make a person hesitate. I always put my name and date on the back of the piece in India ink or something permanent, but on the front I just sign my name. I keep track of when I do my paintings on my computer, along with where I showed them, or sold them, the name of the customer (if I know it), etc. I know a lot of people do date their paintings and I just wonder why. This is not meant to be a criticism, but a question. Thanks for sharing this........Gene

I agree with Gene, the body of the baby needs to be adjusted and with added values, and lightening the water around the snout would make it stand out better. This is a lovely impressionistic style, and I like the fact the tusks are clear without popping out too much. Also, if more values were put in the water behind the mother it would give depth, but not necessary. I also date my painting on the back with signature and sometimes description. I just sign the front. This is a good composition and very pleasing. Really a good job.

Hi Janey, Nice work, I agree with Gene & Heathers comments on the little one and it could be that I just don't know the anatomy of a boar that well, but it looks like the babies head is to big in proportion to the rest of the body. The mother looks great. Jim

The water reads as just a flat shape, try darking the values around the waters edges, and some highlight in a few places; possibly movements lines around the back side of the boar's body. I agree with the others on the values and composition of the over all piece. Interesting choice of subject matter.

Thank you Gene, Heather, Jim and Shana. All your input are very valuable to me. I will see if I could change it. I like to put the date on because that would show me when I did the painting. It may not be good for selling it but oh well. Gene, I like your ideas of recording all info on the computer of each paintings; I will do that from now on. The other night, I took this painting in for my club for critique. I learned a lot especially colors; I think I have to work on it hard and heavy. Happy painting, everyone.
