This is my last try.   If my Two Kayaks came up, I totally don't understand why this one won't work.  They were done exactly the same way.  By the way, how do I get rid of the two attempts that didn't work?  Looked on the FAQs and Lisa says to go to the post and then click on Edit, which I certainly couldn't find on any of the pages.  Oh well, wish me luck with this.   Again, done with NuPastel and Great American Artworks soft pastels on white Kitty Wallis paper.  It was done from a photo taken by me in my back garden, which you can see is completely surrounded with woods.  The garden floor was totally covered with pink impatiens and hostas.  I loved the look of the big flower (it was about 4 feet tall, and I took the photo upclose).  Let me know what you think of this perspective.   I copied the piece quite literally from the photo (size-wise, I mean.)  Of course, I tried to make the flowers and greenery in the background more impressionistic, but the size of the trees is the same as it appeared on the photo.   I'm taking it to my Critique meeting tonight.  Let me know what you think............Thanks.  Gene...............If it doesn't come up, I'm getting off this computer and going down to my studio to paint.....

Wow! This was worth waiting for. You are really good with those pastels. I like the muted look of the background which tends to clarify the fact that this is a close-up view of a rather large plant. I think you've got a winner.

Wow Gene,
This is gorgeous. Great job on getting this one done and up for us to look at.
Like Ron said, it was worth the wait.

I agree it was worth the wait. Lovely rich blue! This is truly beautiful and I love the perspective. What size Wallis is this one a 9x12?

Very Striking! Love the way the light focuses on the flowers.  Color is great too!

Gene, nice job! worth the wait! You have a way with flowers, I find them very difficult... I especially like the way that you depict the shadow of one pedal on another, very nice! I bet even prettier in person, photos seem to wash pastels out sometimes...

Thanks for all comments. You know, the photo shows up much bluer than the painting actually is. The flower is really much more purply blue. The background woods' colors look pretty much the same as the painting, though. Go figure! Any comments on the position of the tree on the upper left? Does it detract from the overall picture? Or should I leave it alone? It actually was right there on my photo, so I put it in, trying to show the depth of the woods in the background. What do you think? Is it distracting? Does it lead the eye out of the picture? Or is it o.k.? Comments welcome. Thanks. Gene

I agree that the tree helps with the perspective, I personally would leave it in. To me it enhances the strong vertical line of the flower, and is far enough in the backgroud not to distract. Just my humble opinon.

I think it's very effective in the background. I would leave it in.

Gene,
As I said earlier, I think you have a winner. I wouldn't change a thing! The tree on the left is right where it needs to be. I think it would have been distracting only if you had placed it behind the flower.

Thanks for all of the nice comments. I am going to leave the tree in. It just seems to me to emphasize the size of the flower, like someone suggested. Heather, the painting is 9 x 13 or so, matted to 16 x 20. ...... I have spent the past few days painting like crazy, but this time it is not pastel...........it is latex on ceilings and walls! Trying to clean my closets and cupboards, etc. in preparation for foot surgery next week and being on crutches for about 5 weeks! Ugh! I can't even imagine not being able to paint (pictures!) for that long! But I just bought a brand new sketch book, I can practice my drawing even with my foot elevated, I think. But I'll be online looking at all of your great art while I am laid up. I recently connected a wireless setup for my computer, so now I can get online from anywhere in my house. The whole thing only cost me $40 with a rebate, so that was a great deal..............Gene

Sorry to hear you'll be out of commission for a while Gene. I know how you feel about running around and getting everything done in a hurry. My husband is having back surgery next month and should be home from work for 4-6 weeks.....AARGHH! ANOTHER child to take care of! You had some nice comments on my stippling work......maybe you could try doing that type of art while you're recooperating. It definitely makes HOURS go by quickly.

Gene,
Sorry you're having surgery, but I'm glad you'll be able to get online.
I know you can use colored pencils with your leg elevated. Maybe you could use them on that new sketchbook.
Good luck on the surgery and please keep us posted on how you're progressing.

Gene, good luck on the surgery and have a quick recovery. Enjoy your sketching, and I look forward to seeing your comments on the work here more often than you usually can.
