I really would like to try pastels and have admired all the work I have seen on this forum.  Would like to ask advice of all you experienced pastel artists out there.

What do I need to get into pastels?  Don't want to waste money on supplies that are not what I need.  Please tell me what I need to get started and would appreciate it if you would recommend what you feel to be the best brand of each.

Thanks so much, Sharon

I would suggest a pad of pastel paper to practice on until you get the feel of the medium. There are a lot of good brands out there, NuPastel (hard), Rembrant (medium), Sennelier (soft), Faber Castell just to name a few. Buy a small set to start to see if you like working with it and get more colors (or sets) as you go. Also a kneaded eraser is good to have, and some pastel pencils for lines. I love pastels and have around 400 colors. Go online to www.dickblick.com to see the pastels listed so you will have an idea, there are also other sites that sell art supplies. Have fun learning.

Sharon, what can be the hardest part of learning to work with pastels (and what is also the most fun) is that you mix your colors on your paper. To keep your colors vibrant start with your darks. Pastels are opaque, so light can go over dark. Putting dark over light however can dull it. I'm talking generalities here of course. If you're able to take a class it would really jump-start things for you.
