Hi guys
Its been a while since I posted, here's what I've been working on.. This is the daughter of Susan Harrison-Tustain, professional NZ watercolourist. Susan painted Shelley in watercolour and I painted her in pastel.
I used Rembrandt pastels on Arches CP 300gsm . Size is 22 x 18. |

| Bruce......This is just beautiful! You've used pastel to do a watercolor painting! What is am really referring to is the background, well, actually the whole thing. If this had been posted without a category, I probably would have guessed it was watercolor. How lucky you are to study with Susan Harrison-Tustain. I have her book and absolutely love it, even though I am primarily a pastelist. What a delightful pose you have her in. I love the way the shadow from her hat falls over her face. Her skin tones are so delicate..... This is really wonderful. Keep on posting! Gene |

Hi Gene
Thanks for your lovely comments, yes I am very fortunate to have Susan as a mentor.. she is an amazing artist and very lucky to have Shelley as a model... if you would like to see Susan's version in watercolour stop by www.susanart.com. The technique I use for pastel is not dissimilar to the way I paint watercolour... I like pastel because it is so quick and spontaneous..not as easy to sell as watercolour or oil though..
Thanks for stopping by Ronnie..
Thank you Ron.... My dad's name was Ron and I have a son called Ronnie, great name.. |

| Thank you Jim and Anna.. I love pastels, although I'm tossing around the idea of going to oil and trying that out... seems there is greater demand for oil portraits.. |

Bruce, If you go to oil I am sure your work will be just as excellent. I love this work of art! What a beautiful portrait, you have portrayed delicate skin in delicate colors and she looks so fragile in this. Thank you for sharing with us. |

| Very nice painting. I would like to see you take advantage of the rich and intense colors that pastel has to offer. I could see you pushing into an impressionistic style that would add even more sparkle to your technical skills. |

Hi Jess thnak you for stopping by, yes it is soft gauze.
Thank you Suzanna and Retha
Hi Janey, thank you , you're very welcome.
Hi Shana, my secret to painting skin tones is to keep the layers of pastel very thin and I use colour shapers to blend.. the glow on the skin comes from using complementary colours..
edm548.. thanks for your suggestion, I'm still new at pastel (this is my fourth painting) so any help is most welcome.. |

You rendition is beautiful!! Her expression is so apropos with that pose. If I had to do a crit, the only comment I would have is to consider making the shadows maybe a value or so darker. especially under the hat. I think that would really set off those wonderful eyes even more. I think the gauze is great.

Hi Sandy Thank you for your comments and yes I agree with your comment about the shadows.. I argued with myself for days before I finally decided to leave it as is... IRL the green eyes really pop out and I didn't want to lose this effect, also I didn't have the right hue of pastels ... I've sent it to the frames so I can't be tempted to change anything ... I may paint Shelley in oils sometime and I will deepen the shadows as you suggest..
Cheers Bruce |
