Ok, so I finished this last work for 2006. 11x14 on pastel panel. Ahead I'm doing two companion pieces, one in watercolor, a close-up detail and another in oil paint (see oil forum pg 3 work in progress). The best to all in the new year- Laura

Well done. I like the faint reflection on the surface also, plus the texture of the pastel showing.

It seems to be done on paper. Do you hhave any problems with the oil leeching into the paper?

Hi Cedarcroft,

No, this work is done on sanded pastel panel made by Amperstand. I like the rigid suppport. I don't work on paper, although I hear it is possible to work on paper with oil pastels.-L

Can you use oil pastels on gessoed paper? I love your choice of subject matter, very playful. scochran

Shana,
As far as I've read, you can use oil pastel on just about anything including paper. So gessoed paper should be fine. Apparently, the pastels don't contain the same critical amount of oil as in paint, so it is reasonably safe on paper.

PS Thanks for your comment, I like playful or whimsical subjects

This is wonderful...what a fun subject!
...are you at all tempted to make the blue on the lollypop a bit brigher in the center?
But great as is...and I'm only guessing.
I love the dots...such a silly candy...but remember thinking
they were great as a kid!

Lovely, colorful piece and well executed.  Regarding the comments on use of OP on paper, OP can be used on almost any support with little preparation.  However, if you trend toward the softer, oiler OP brands, than there is some dange of oil incursion into the support.  Similar to the surface offered by Ampersand's Pastelboard are heavy papers by either ArtSpectrum (Colourfix) or Wallis (Professional or Museum grade sanded papers).  Both of these are essentially heavy grade watercolor paper with a special gritted primer screened onto it.  You can also purchase the Colourfix Primer separately and apply it to supports you use.  Using heavy watercolor paper with a gesso primer would probably be better than using the paper unprimed if archival quaility is a concern for you, just to guard against oil intrusion inot the support.
