I've been creating multiple works from the same reference material in a variety of mediums. Not in the same work but one may be in oil another in water color. I've always been discouraged to do this, the old adage: "Jack of all trades, master of none", comes to mind. Personally I find what I learn in one medium can often be applied and help me in another. Does anyone else have any insights to working in multiple mediums?
This work can find it's companion in the water media topics. The oil pastel was done first. 11x14 Ampersand pastel panel. |

Oh, my, Laura! You do have a fine hand for producing oil pastels! Wow! Like you, I have discovered that as I try my hand at various mediums my understanding increases 'fourfold!' And I, also, apply it to other mediums. I think it's a great way to learn, and it keeps one's interest high. The only problem is, I need to keep ordering new supplies! I haven't used the Ampersand pastel panel. Great job! I look forward to checking out all your work. Marj |

Hi Marjorie,
I use Holbein Oil Pastels. Sometimes you can find nice sets on E-Bay at pretty good prices. I started with a smaller set and now I just buy them separately to suppliment the set and fill in with colors I'm partial to. The surface I like the best are these pastel panels. I love the creamy mix of colors you get with oils pastels.
As far as ordering new supplies, I know it well! About the only medium I'm not partial to is acrylic paint (except I'm trying to do a mural in my house and acrylic seems to be the only possible medium to do it in)
It's sad that oil pastels have never gained the respect as in other mediums. It is truly a respectable medium and not just the cray-pas of childhood. -Laura |

Laura, I have seen a lot of beautiful oil pastels including yours. I also share your enthusiam for different mediums, have tried most of them and have now settled on using oils and pastels, I need different techniques in each and learn from using both. It makes for a refreshing change to go back and forth.
The companion for this one showed stronger values than you have here, but then again it could be the photo or my monitor. |

Hi Heather,
No, your monitor is fine. In the watercolor I used a greater range of contrast and more saturated color. I tried not to look at the oil pastel while doing the watercolor so it would look different. -Laura |

Hi Laura, I think the contrast and saturated color adds to your skill, this painting is excellent but I do prefer the other. |

Laura,
This is so nice and your subject matter is so refreshing. I'm afraid I don't have any tips for multiple mediums. I only work in watercolor or simple pencil. They, of course, aid each other. I would think working in oil, pastel, watercolor, etc. would bring out your creativity and keep you challenged.

| Love it. Nice work. I'm experimenting with all mediums on one subject as well. You do learn and improve with each medium used. |

| I am so happy to know others that cannot settle into that 1 art medium. I have a hard time keeping my interest level high for just one medium. Although, I always go back to soft pastels, so they must be my favorite. I began oil painting again this fall after about a 23 year absents, now I am thinking I want to play in oil pastel and watercolors. Your subject matter is so fun. I think your on to something with doing these in all different mediums. scochran |

I guess everyone likes to experience different media, partly because of our curious nature? I also tempted to try everything however, I am staying with pastels for now to explore its potential further. One thing, though, I have experimented with mixed media to do a couple of paintings. I think by doing so, this will peak one's curiousity? Myself I have tried so far is color pencil and pastel, oil pastel with turpentine (on canvas).
The combination is quite a few. Has anyone tried this technique or is this a taboo? Your thoughts?
