JJ,
I just don't get alot of abstract art. I should study it more to see if
there is something I'm missing. Is it a message you are putting into it?
Is the viewer suppose to see something or feel something? What does Cuzco Blue mean?
I know I'm coming from a point of ignorance, but maybe you could include a little education
here.

I could roughly sum it up as "There is two kinds of abstract art representational abstracts where you can still see what the artist is painting with a difference
or non representational abstracts which is more about what the artist feels and colours than any thing else. check out the artist sterling Edwars for instance, I love his works.

Oooh, I love geometric abstracts. . .

I love finding the geometry in real life, and making a painting that expresses that, yet is still a real subject.

Jim, I think the point to this painting (jwoodee, correct me if I'm wrong please) is to predominantly show a pleasingly balanced composition, and uses bold colors and textures to enhance the viewing experience.

It's not supposed to tell story, but I think it IS intended to tell an "impression."

From the colors I felt adobe and the shapes seemed to indicate Mexican Architecture too. I did a quick look up of "Cuzco" on the internet, and sure enough, it has to do with Peru.

This painting is really nice, IMO, and I'm glad you posted it.

Hi Jim,

I'm focusing on the shapes - you have 4 square/rectangular shapes each a different size and value essentially meeting.  This is complimented by the triangle like shadow(far right) that leads you back into the picture.  There is really no diect message or hidden meaning I'm placing into the piece.  I leave the viewer alone to think and feel what they may at my work.  "Cuzco Blue" is referenced from a photo I took in Cuzco, Peru the ancient Inca capital.  Sorry I haven't responded earlier - I didnt check the "notify when someone replies" option.    Thanks for your questions.  I hope my explanation offers some insight.

Yes it does. Thank you very much.
Sometimes I have a tendency to read to much
into something.

Jim - thanks for putting into words exactly what I was thinking!!    I don't "get" a lot of abstract art - I always want to know what I am supposed to see in it but when I ask I am told you see whatever you want to see in it!!   That doesn't mean much to me either - I actually like things to look like something!   Perhaps I am a little old-fashioned!   I like the colours in Cuzco Blue - but only because blue is my favourite colour!

Your compostion is strong. Your colors have unity, the red horzontial adds a contrast. The bit of texture adds interest. Did you get it from the gesso? I have been doing some reading on abstract art. I think you have a good piece of work here. I would hang it on my wall. scochran

In response, [ Did you get it from the gesso? ], yes I lay on the gesso thick with large paint brushes - the type that interior painters use and the bristles tend to leave marks that will be easily picked up when the oil pastel is applied later in the process.  What books have you been reading about abstract art?  I find reading and painting go hand in hand - forces your mind to think in different ways and prevents burnout.

Thanks agian for the compliments, as I do feel this is one of my better pieces.
