This was one of the October challenge pics from WC's Oil Pastel thread. I still need to do some re-working (add another tree to the lower left to balance out the weight of the right side of the painting and do some more value work - maybe some sky colored reflections- in the snow on the mountain) but basically, this is close to the finished piece. C & C encouraged. Thanks |

Thanks Suna - this is one of my mistakes - I got it way too "heavy" on the right side and need to add some weight/interest on the left to balance it out. Haven't decided what to do, if anything. I might just chalk it up to a learning experience.

This painting doesn't look unbalanced. Everything need not be balanced. This work does not disturb me. The small tree at the left is heavy weight; I don't know why. Maybe because it's the center of attention. This work reminds me of Christmas . It can be a nice Christmas card. It's pleasing.---Suna. |

I agree with Suna - I don't think it looks unbalanced, either. It works just the way it is. What I see is lightening up the distant trees on the right slightly and maybe add some slight darks to the big one upclose on the right to make it not blend/get lost with the ones next to it.
I've never tried oil pastels...what do you think of them? Pros? Cons? I've thought it would be nice to have something that is plane friendly, but I don't think I would enjoy using them. Maybe you could convince me otherwise. |

Kim - I've been having a good time with them. This picture is only the second one I have tried so it's VERY MUCH a "learn as you go" thing for me. I've gotten some really good advice from over on the Wet Canvas forum and great support, too. They also have a ton of really good articles which I poured over for weeks before actually making any financial investment in "good stuff". I will be glad to share with you (and anyone else who may be interested) what I actually bought and why; and how I am using them. Don't want to bore you unless you really want to hear
I do have my third picture almost finished - I will post it later this week. I have started on a fourth as well which seems to be coming along fairly well. One thing I really like about oil pastels is that they are quick; but, I've figured out that I need to keep several projects going at one time since they sometimes do need to "rest" for a day or two (or at least overnight)when they get several layers built up.
Let me know and I'll share what I have learned about them.
