I'm almost done with this one -- it's a painting done from a reference photo posted in the wetcanvas.com February 2008 Oil Pastel Challenge (Oil Pastel channel). I really enjoyed working on it; it was one of those pieces that seems to magically paint itself. Those are the best kinds!

It's done on a 12x9" piece of dark green, acid-free cardstock, actually sold in the scrapbooking section of the craft store, with a mixture of oil pastels: cheapie (and ancient) Grumbachers, Van Goghs, Senneliers, Holbeins and Cray Pas.

Comments & critique welcome!

May I ?
The flower is alone. It should be the brightest of the values, the colors. Although it is beautiful it is alone, it is fully opened and ready to fade. It's surroundings should be dark and haunting. Paint not what you see, but what you feel. The beauty of the rose should be the focus of your painting. The composition is good, but can be improved with darker values.
You have a very good start, your talent shows.

Thanks for your suggestions, Realist2. You are right that the painting would benefit from some darker values around the flower in order to make the rose stand out -- and in fact that was exactly my plan, my next step.

This piece is more about simply celebrating the beauty of a flower on a warm summer day rather than focusing in on the inevitable fading of the rose. It's one of a series with a similar theme.

I began the series after my mother's lung cancer surgery a couple years ago. I was so grateful that she was well and healthy -- and that the surgeons were confident that they'd been able to remove all the cancer -- that I started an oil pastel painting of oriental lilies, entitled "Hope" (http://oilpastelsociety.com/2006Show/versatility2006_page2.htm). We're happy to say she's been cancer free since.

We all see things in a different light. You do with this as you want, it will be good. Your florals are well done and appealing to the eye. I'm happy to hear of your mother's victory. I know and understand all too well, the demon called cancer. May your mother live cancer free and well, I hope for her the best.

This is lovely...nice work. The other thought on contrasts might be that you will bring a few of the lightest values up at the end for more highlights. But I love soft values...so like it as it is too!
