Your painting has some good possibilities. I like the abstract feeling. As the next step you can develop depth by tying in your darks--don't leave them isolated. You've created an interesting challenge by making the foreground edges (window frame, etc) a cool color. It works well with the window background and that's where the eye goes. Now, what are you going to do with the door to tie it in?

Tequi,

Thanks for feedback. When you state [ As the next step you can develop depth by tying in your darks--don't leave them isolated.  ]  are you suggesting incorporate more dark into the areas that are light?  For instance I could see putting a lighter tone of the darkest dark of the window to the left  into the background surrounding that currently surrounds the cool green frame of the windows.

Also:  [ Now, what are you going to do with the door to tie it in? ]  There are subtle red lines that surround the door that are more obvious in the live piece, I'm not entirely sure the digital image picked this up - or perhaps I could push this a bit more.

I could almost do an entirely separate painting on the left window.  I feel the piece has a degree of success and maybe I should just move on.

And thanks for honest comments - based on some of your other replies on peoples work its nice to have criticism that is rendered is a way to help.  Warm fuzzies are nice and encouraging, but sometimes can stifle artistic growth,

The only real dark is in the window and above the door and neither are tied in. You need to think about how the eye is going to be led from one to another. I'm not talking about color, but value. If you get the values right, just about any color will work. One way to do this is take off your glasses or squint at the photo to where you see a blur (or distort it on your computer). Where you see or almost see dark, paint dark and hook them up to one another. Figure that ultimately you'll need to make adjustments to make the composition work, whether or not the dark was in the photo.

You could do several other things: paint a cast shadow in the foreground that slides up the door; incorporate some of the colors in the dark part of the window in the dark parts of the door; darken the small strip of street or sidewalk area and follow up with horizontal lost and found lines where you would expect physical indentations as the eye moves up to the window; open the door slightly by creating a shadow against one side of the door.

I happen to like the coral tone of the stucco in combination with the turquoiise blue trim--it has a subtle depth that appears to have occurred by layering your colors or scratching through them, but you have so much turq/blue in the painting that the two colors (spaces) are competing. Hope I haven't given you too much information and that this helps. Moving on works, too.

Thanks you for your additional comments - I've been spending that past two weeks gooing back doing still life charcoal drawings to gain a better grasp on my drawing skills. I need to focus more on value and how this can play in a piece. Emotinally I'll probabley move on but your feedback furthers expose some of my weaknesses in my work that I should address, and hopefully improve.

You have TWO subjects competing.  Tie them together.  A shadow was suggested.  Maybe a flower box under the window and an address number running between the door and the window or all of the above.  Only 2 centers of interest is frustrating for the viewer.

There is no center of interest. When I squint at the painting, the only dark is the window. The rest of the painting is very similar in value, so I can't tell if the door is back of the wall or in front of the wall. What is it I'm supposed to see and say - there's the star of the painting?
