I am attaching (I hope) oil pastel started with Holbein oil pastels (as recommended by Laura)--still life with nosy cat. I don't have much of a choice of colors yet since I just got a basic set, but I like their consistency. I just recently noticed that Cray-Pas has an "expressionist" set and a "specialist" set. Does anybody know what the difference is? I have the expressionist and I do like their choice of colors, but I would like them to be softer.  Comments on painting appreciated.  Thanks  Mel

I had trouble sending picture. I made it really small, under 100 kb and tried   jpg & tiff and it still didn't go thru. Don't know what else to do. Will try one more time.

Make sure that you are logged in with the correct password, this page does time out after a bit. I find jpg format loads the best, and also size at less than 2x4 inches and under 100kb as you have.

If you are still having problems, you may send the photo (in large size at least 5x7 inches) to me at sea_which@yahoo.com and I will see what I can do with it.

Dear Heather, I tried to send picture to your email but it came back twice. Not having luck with computer. I tried to send digital photo instead of scan but it wont go thru either. I give up.

Differences Between “Specialist” and “Expressions” Oil Pastels. The following information was gathered from desciptions of the products in the catalogs for Dick Blick Art Supplies, and Jerry’s Artarama Art Supplies. “Specialists”: Are for professionals. Available in 84 colors. Square, 2 1/2”x 3/8”, unwrapped sticks. Set of 12 colors $17.99 “Expressions”: Available in 50 colors. Round 2 2/3”x 7/16” wrapped sticks. Set of 12 colors $4.99 Possibly by pricing alone, it could be concluded that the “Expressions” are student-grade quality. Square sticks are useful when using sides to cover large areas and for creating grooving spaces in those large areas. Wrapped sticks are useful, because the oil pastel sticks can start to melt from the heat of the artist's hand.
