I read the whole thread. Carver your work is beautiful however you get the image. This old lady has drawn from scratch, enlarged an image in photoshop and then traced it, projected an image onto a large piece of paper from a camera "lucida". Vermeer used the camera and I don't think gallaries are turning away his paintings.
I get the most enjoyment out of drawing from scratch and then painting. The past few years that is the way I have been painting. But I just might look into the Corel program.
The only question seems to be (surmised from this thread) will an art show or gallery accept it? (Or one of your fellow artists.)

I've been reading this thread with interest for the past couple of weeks. First, I want to say I'm proud of the message board members for the way they've handled this lively discussion. Controversy isn't comfortable, but discussion of controversial subjects leads to insights.

Discussion is one thing; accusation is another. Here is what Carver has said about his paintings:

"The paintings that I have shown on this forum have all been done traditionally, except I project my photograph onto a blank canvas and start from there. Drawing and then adding oils...."

I've visited the Corel web page and have made these observations. First, I'm not sure whether posting on the Corel website necessarily means that the image is purely created using Corel with no paint at all. Second, I compared Carver's posts on this forum with all images on the Corel website. Only one is the same. With the possible exception of that one painting, there is still no reason to think Carver has been less than forthcoming about his technique and process.

Some of you feel that that painting on top of a projected (but not printed) image is not as legitimate as painting without the digital help. Some of you have no problem with the digital prompt. This forum provides a wonderful opportunity to discuss your opinions.

As administrator of the message board, I don't want to take sides on the issue, but I will suggest this one guideline. If a digital image is printed (not merely projected) on a canvas or other surface and then painted over, the work falls under mixed media. If a digital image is projected on the surface and then painted over, it still qualifies as oil, acrylic, watercolor or whatever other media the artist uses. In this case, the artist might want to specify that the painting was painted with the help of a projected digital image, but this is not mandatory. Keep in mind that we do not require artists to describe their painting methods when they post, although members are free to ask about them.

Again, for the most part, I'm impressed with the way message board members are handling this discussion. Let's continue to treat controversial subjects with respect for the opinions and practices of others. And let's be very careful about accusations.
