Alert
One of things that an artist must master if composition is to be good is the use of positive and negative space.
My God did they drill that into our heads when I was at Parson's.
Technique and style is left up to the individual artist and very rarely dictates the composition.
Once you decide on a subject, small thumb nail sketches should be done to see how it works on paper first.
It'll help you learn how to look at your subjects.
Once you are happy with something, you could do a several small color renderings.
When I illustrated, I'd sometimes just make a photocopy of the drawing and kind of do a color study on those for reference when I was working on the actual painting.
It's not too far off from the idea of working art up from your sketch pads that are filled with studies and small notes. (which I'm guilty of having very few of these days)
