| The photo didn't pick up the sheen very well on the satin lapel. |

what a handsome grandson!...and portrait!...this is full of life!...and his smile is so infectious...you did a fabulous job on his teeth! most tend to overpaint em with values, to the point all we see is teeth!...but you have blended them nicely into the whole of the features....everything is working for this portrait!..great job!...
i think i would take a few more minds to just definet the light on his rose a tiny bit.. having the three petals on one side, even if it was in the photo, is a bit distracting...teensy bit..nothing dramatic...having one of those flat against the black behind or on this side of the rose would have been more interesting i think....
all in all? i think this is a fabulous success! and your going to have to tell us how it was received!!! |

Thank you OWS so much! Those leaves bothered me too, I painted them out, painted them back in, so I will paint them out again, though I think I will leave the bottom one there to separate from the white shirt. Then have another on the black, and the point of one barely showing next to it, I like threes rather than twos for balance for the eye. White roses tend to have a touch of translucent green in their shadows but haven't added that yet. Will pop out the highlights on petals when a little dryer. I just notice his left front tooth is not straight on his left side, will fix that as he has perfect teeth.
I used a few reference photos to get this, I knew what pose I wanted and finally achieved it. He is going to University of North Carolina in the fall, majoring in art and theatre with minor in business. He has been very active in the theatre in high school and has dramatic body language (who doesn't at 18?)
Will repost when finished, and will definitely let you know how it is received!!! Can't wait for him to see it. The debutante painting I posted last year was of his sister and she loved it. Wish you were here then to critique as I had some problems with it, but think I worked them all out. If you are curious you can see her at my website under portrait gallery and she is the one holding the red roses. Thank you again! |

| Thank you Jim for poppiing in. Appreciate your comments very much, will post finished painting either tonight or tomorrow. Am thinking of calling it "Would you care to dance?" because that is exactly his posture and smile when he asked me to dance. |

Darn! Colors aren't true, shirt is not that blue, more sheen on satin lapel, values in face more blended in real life. I tried several times to photograph this, for some reason either my camera or the light is not cooperating today. Tried outside and indoors, so try and visualize it the way it really looks.
My thanks go to OWS for her very helpful hints and help on finishing this. Her advise is invaluable. |

Looks great Heather! Photos of oil paintings are hard. The rose looks great and I'm sure the rest is just fine too. Time to see his face light up when you give it to him. Jim

Heather! THis looks great! I agree with OWS.....his teeth came out fantastic. I also love the gift you have for eyework. The eyes in this piece, and the cat pieces and the fairy miniature are really well done. I hope your grandson appreciates what a talented grandma he has And I like the title too.

Jim, Jess and MIKET, Thank you all so much for your encouragement and lovely comments. I am exhausted, I wasn't sure I would get it done in time, one or two more glazes (that wouldn't show up in photo) and I will sign and let it dry until plane flight.
I thought I had used all my energy, but must have gotten a second wind (I have been painting from 6:30am until around 2:30pm with only the mandatory breaks - no food just green tea with honey and lemon), because when I put painting into enclosed sun room to dry away from cat, I looked around to see what else I could do. So touched up a few of my pastel miniatures, like them better now, signed the back of them, put them in their sleeves. Now I have run out of steam and I am exhausted! Now I have spaghetti cooking for - not breaksfast, not brunch, not lunch - what would you call it? Late brunchdin? |
