Getting tired of the cold, so I went out to the barn and painted a tropical scene with the sun coming out after a rain storm. 24 X 18 on canvas. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Jim

| Jim, the coloration is striking. You've done a great job on the rocks (nice texture) and the "background" water - really depicts the sun coming out. You've also captured movement in the falling water very nicely. What I can see to be enhancers to this nice painting is adding some highlights to the palm tree leaves (like you did the water) and transition the pooled water into the falling water. As it is now, the water is both horizontal (pooled) and vertical (the falls), but in natural form it must "bend" or turn before it can fall. Does that make sense? I'm not very familiar with the formation of palms, but I'm wondering if the leaf branches at the back of the tree are really that high. Since you're looking up at them, I don't think they would be that visible. Maybe someone else can clear up that issue. Thank you for sharing. |

Thank you Kim for your input. As far as the leaves on the palm tree go, they form in many different directions. I was stationed in Hawaii for 2 years and San Diego for 2 and had the opportunity to get pictures of a lot of palm trees. They may not be the typical ones you see, but I have seen them growing this way. Thanks though, Jim

Jim, I have seen water run clear and turn into falls just as you have depicted here, it depends on the rock formation under the water. I have seen palms like this also. The water sparkling is fabulous. I have been to Hawaii and Tahiti and the sky reminds me of those islands (plus my own birth-country NZ also ). I would suggest putting a little darker value in the palm fronds where they are close to the tree, easy to do with oil just put a tinted glaze over them, maybe a combo of raw sienna and a darker green. Thank you for this fresh breath of tropical weather. So I see a green leaf at the bottom of the painting, indicating foliage? Did you crop that? A couple more leaves would look really good. |

Hi Jim, This is really nice. Did you paint this from a reference or from out of your head? Either way, it's very good. How many mediums do you work in? I know you do pastels. (and very well, I might add) |

Hi Heather, Thank you so much for your kind comments. I wish I could get a better photo of this painting. Oils are the hardest for me to photograph. They have a lot of reflective quality to them. I even did these outside. Your right about the fronds. I will darken them. It's funny you picked up the green in front of the falls. I didn't realize it was there until I put it up. It's actually grass in front of the tree that I leaned the painting on! Go figure. Maybe I should have added foliage at the bottom. Jim

Hi Ron, This one is just out of my head, and thanks for the comments. Geez, I've done oils, acrylics, watercolor and pastels now. I had only done oils and acrylics till I joined the forum. I picked up watercolor and pastels since joining. That was with the help of people like Heather, Gene & Bluiz. Someone I don't know if you met, her name is Connie actually got me into doing watercolors. I haven't seen her post here for a long time. She had great insight and advice on painting. I've really gotten hooked on pastels and watercolors. I've only been doing them for about 8 months now. I have learned alot since joining this forum, and owe a lot of my success to the above fellow artists. On June 16th I'm taking a pretty big step for me. I will be showing my paintings at an event called "Super Saturday" at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. I've never put myself out on a limb like this before, so I'm excited and a littly antsy at the same time. I've been in some form of sales for over 25 years, but if I was turned down I didn't take it personally. I was selling a product or service. This is me selling me. Rejection here is going to be very personal. Oh well if you never try you never succeed. Thanks again Ron, Jim

i like it too. the only thing i question is the green below the trees, which is a little line-y for me. i don't know if some of that would drop into the rocks in front or not...
you will have a blast at the show. for everyone who is clueless and says things that make you wince (and there will be a few, but usually not many), there will be people who you have obviously touched and who really like what you do and are amazed at your talent. Have fun! |

Thanks mksarts, I'm looking foward to just having a good time. The landscape is just out of my head so in another world the grass is probably different. Your right though, I could have put some grass in the rocks. It is after all a tropical venue with lots of vegatation. Jim

| Jim, I was curious about the tree question so I pulled some of my photos, hope this helps! I think you are good with the palms, only I think I would darken the center parts with highlight from behind, otherwise I think this is very nice, was it from a photo? or memory? |

| Jim, Good Luck on SS, I know how you feel, and I often wonder if I will ever have the courage to put myself in the public eye. You have to let us know how it was! I am going to try for membership in a local guild again soon, third time, I am very hesitant, and am dragging my feet on preparation. You are right this is very personal!!! |

| Dreamy painting make me want to get a cool drink and sit under the palm trees. Art- wise there is something that bothers me about the trees, I can not really put my finger on it, maybe a little fuller. They look week in your otherwise lovely water and sky. scochran |
