It's sad how few galleries here in New york still represent realism. -Laura

Wow... Like gritty film. Nicely done. Look at those marbles, it's all the games. Why did you paint this? And BTW, your shadows are measurable. Damn fine work.

Hi,
The original is not as gritty as the repro exhibits. The theme was simply chosen for it's content. Sometimes I like to choose fun topics, things that others can relate to. This is a small work 6"x6" and was actually painted on the lid of a cigar box. Jim, I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'measurable' as far as the shadows go. Do they need help...if so how?
I don't try to paint 'photo' realistically. I like being able to see the quality of a brush stoke. But I do want what I paint to be convincing; shadows, lighting, dimention etc.
Thanks for taking the time to comment -Laura

Laura,
This is simply beautiful. You demonstrate your grasp of the medium
and your technical skills show through, not to mention the patience it
must have taken to finish this piece.

Laura, I was trying to think of something to bring up that you could improve on, but really, it's pretty perfect.

Nice work, and I'd love to see more.

Measurable in relation to what casts it. Don't you dare doubt this painting. It's perfect the way it is. And I like the grainyness of the picture. It adds to it for me. I hope you post more.

Laura,
Your realism really stands out. Just one thing-I find the composition a little over crowded or maybe "busy" is the word.

I think what is more amazing is that you fitted all this detail in 6"x6". Fine work.....congrats.

Laura,
This is truly well done. Beautiful! The balance, composition and subject matter are excellent. Your values and colors are perfect. I love it! And you achieved this on such a small area!

All I can say is, wow!   I love this............I know what you mean about the New York galleries and realism.    But, how about any galleries and watercolor and pastels.   I spent some time in Santa Fe recently and went to the gallery that handles Albert Handell's pastels.   They were absolutely beautiful, but too many galleries are afraid to handle anything with glass, I guess.  Too bad, in my opinion.         Keep painting.........you are very talented!

although acceptance into a gallery is seen as THE thing to accomplish...many times the gallery is as fickle as the gallery owners taste...one has to find the right gallery for your type of work...
i dont see realism as something that isnt high on the market today....ya just have to find the right market...~wink~..
this is a wonderful piece...stick with it and find that right gallery!

Gosh dern if I am not following "One who sees" around here.

I also think this is really fine Laura, and the marbles are perfect.  We play a game on a beautiful black walnut home made board called "aggravation", AND these marbles look as good as the ones we play with every day.
