Richard,
Your compsition is excellent. The two framed pictures on the wall add interest. Color scheme is very appealing. I love the expression on your face which shows inquisitiveness and perhaps a little apprehension about whose calling and what the call is about. |

Yeah, It's one of my favorites. I never knew how educated and intelligent he was until I was sucked in to his paintings. Almost every letter he wrote is poetic and deep in thought. And his paintings, I just don't see that passion in any other artist. My friends and family think I'm a bit over board when it comes to van Gogh. Maybe so. Here are a couple more I just love...
I cannot help it that my pictures do not sell. Nevertheless the time will come when people will see that they are worth more than the price of the paint.
One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul and yet no one ever come to sit by it. Passersby see only a wisp of smoke from the chimney and continue on the way.

Jim,
Van Gough is also my favorite painter. I have read three books on him and have seen videos -"Lust for Life", "Vincent" , and a couple others the titles of which skip my mind right now. And I love thet beautiful song by Maclain :"Vincent" about the painting Starry Night. |

You guys might want to check out "Vincent and Theo"... The dialog is not represented as you would expect, being one who has the letters and the movie " Vincent". But it is the best visually done with good actors that I've come across.
I see that time period in both of your work. |

Nope, but now I'll have to look for that. The one I'm talking about is a rundown from about the time he was booted from the church in the early 1880s until he shot himself. It vaguely touches on what became of Theo afterwards. Vincent is played by Tim Ross. You might remember him in Pulp Fiction as Honey Bunny.
Anyway, it's a must for the van Gogh geeks. |

| Did you see the one where he comes back into today's world and is proven to be authentic because he tells the authorities to ex-ray a painting he did and they will find ,I think it was a head of boy ,under the painting? They were amazed because only Van Gough would have known this. I think the title was "Vincent and me". |

Now I'm going to have to find all of these things you two are talking about. They seem so very interesting ..
I've seen Lust For Life many years ago but want to revisit it now.
Irving Stone (I think that was the author) also wrote a very good historical fiction book about Camille Pisarro which I really enjoyed reading and (I think) one about Leonardo.

I was so intrigued by your back and forth conversation that I forgot to comment on your piece. I really like it and it is Hopperesque. There is a lonely quality to it that seems to be present in all of Hopper's work.

Sometimes I can't shut up about the Impressionists... BTW, I named the actor as Tim Ross and it's Roth. Which gets me back to van Gogh. Though he know most of the so called Impressionists, he was not really in their clique and called himself a Colorist. Look at "The Road to Saint-Remy" To me this is the start of the Fauvist movement. Very interesting though not for all.
Richard's painting above makes me think of Caillebotte and specifically "Pont de l'Europe". The same palette and style. That puts you in pretty good company Richard. I'd like to see more of this from you. |

| I wouldn't have guessed Hopper in this study but I think you acheived an sensitive interaction and moment. Your use of color and compostion is excellent as much of the work you post. My only thought that in the left corner the curly Q part of the chair takes me of the page. Not a major problemn as its balanced again the repeated shape with the chair in fron of the woman on the phone. I hope you have done a show cause you do have a lot of talent. |
