I started this painting last spring when I was able to get the tulips and finally finished it from a photograph that I had take of the setup. The parrot tulips were very difficult to paint because of their convoluted forms, so I decided to forget the subject matter and just paint forms. Lo and Behold, when finished, they looked like the parrot tulips in front of me. All comments appreciated, good or bad. I'd like to know what you think I could do to improve this piece. Phil Sydell at 11:52 AM (GMT -8) on 22 Nov 2008] I have made changes and would like a critique on them. I think that they are an improvement. The vase was lightened to make it look more like the original and the shadows were lightened. I used a veridian glaze over the background. What do you think?

Phil, This is a nice painting. I like the tulips and the texture on the vase. the back wall is a little stark. Perhaps a little shadow on the wall like the other wall. Only keep the shadow low, so it is cast from the light from above.

I agree, the composition could be better and the next time I do something like this I'll give a little more thought to the composition. There was a magenta vase on the left which I painted out becouse it was a distraction. The perfume bottle and plate are really inappropriate and I don't know why I decided to put them into the painting. Other than that, The tulips and vase are pretty and I have a customer for the painting as is and "so be it"

Hi Phil. I agree about the composition but the flowers turned out beautifully.

Maybe it's not the best composition, but it's a beautiful painting. You did a fantastic job with the flowers and vase, along with the color choices in the walls. I think we all do this sort of "what was I thinking?" from time to time. When this happens to me, and I realize what I've done, I concentrate on the execution of the painting itself. If I've made improvement in that aspect, I'm pleased - I've still learned something.

The open tulips are all they should be. I am drawn to the colors in the painting - all the variations of purple. I like the first draft a little more because the shadows on the table are more clearly stated, although I see why you made modifications to the first pass. If I could make suggestions for improvement, I would have two: make more clear what is in shadow and what is in light; lose the edge of the flowers meeting the background. The contrast of the dark buds against the light wall snaps out too much for it to be part of the background. Forgive me if I speak frankly; I do not mean to say this is not a very good painting, because I think it is.

I like the background and the table, good cool and warm color contrast. For the tulip and vase, you only painted the local color, i.e. light and dark purple, light and dark green.
