Hi Ron, welcome to a felloow pastellist.  I love the softness of your painting.  I am going to try to post again but now, having seen your painting,  I am not as happy with mine.

And JT,  I love your ability to capture the light!

Okay here's goes again ...hopefully this will load.

Hey Barb, congrats on the upload.I like the way you used the different blues.
Ron, your vase is very "glassy" and the shape is right ,too. It is sooo much fun seeing what everyone is doing.

I loved seeing all these renditions. I was particularly interested in how everyone treated the background. jt32 you even included the coffee pot in the background! That was great. I love all the flowers done, and how the look changes with the medium used. It is really so much fun to see what everyone does. OK here's mine. 9x12 Acrylic on canvas sheet. (I don't think my camera is doing the painting justice, the colors are much deeper than they show). -Nan

Hello all,

I just love these big yellow sunflowers. I am jumping in on your challenges.

I love the pastels. I thought that I might do the flower in pastels. But I had my oil out and I had a 8x10 wrapped canvas handy so that is what this is done on.

The acrylic that jt32 did is wonderful and bright. I love the contrast inside in the blue vase that gives it a reflective quality.

Hi, CTBarb, and anyone else having trouble posting images.

Setting your dpi at 72 may not be enough to get the image size down to less than 100 kb.

Here are some tips for resizing your image before you post it. They apply to Photoshop Elements, but other image-editing software probably has similar commands:
1. Set your dpi  to 72
2. Click on "constrain proportions" and "resample image." Then set one side of your image dimensions for at least 4 or 5 inches.
3. When you save, click on  “Save for Web” option (as opposed to just “Save”). This allows you to see the original version and a Web version, which has fewer pixels.
4. Look at the  byte size listed under the Web version. If your image is still over 100kb, lower the image quality percentage until you get the byte size under 100K. Don't worry, the quality will still be fine for the Web.

This thread on the FAQs forum may also help:

If you still can't post your image, email it to me at artistsnetwork@fwpubs.com and I'll see if I can work with it.

Best,
Holly

Priti,  I love your oil version.  Did you reverse the light and shadow areas on purpose in the big sunflower?  It makes the smaller flower come forward.  And using the orange red as a complement to the blue vase works really well.

Shana,  I really like how free your brush work is.  I think you might have added more orange to the two back flowers to punch up the color some and complement the vase.

Nan, as always your composition and rendering is wonderful.  I wonder if you made the value differences greater, it would be more dramatic.

I've decided I need to go back into mine and put some softer pastels over the Nupastels that I used...try to get that modelling on the vase better and to get it look glassy like Ron's and add more brightness in the light side of the flowers.  But going back into paintings that I have "finished" is always a challenge for me.  I am always looking to move on to another subject!  If I get it done before Sunday, I'll repost now that I have Maggie's magic formula.

I am in awe of the work I am seeing on this challenge. Shana, I love the brush strokes. The flow of your flower petals is wonderful. And Priti, I love your colors. Your oils are so alive with color. JT32, I just saw that you did yours in 3 hours! wow! And it's so wonderful. Ron, I really like how you handled the light coming through the flower petals. And Barbara, I like your work as it is, but if you do rework it, please repost it. I took your advice and reworked mine to get a bit more drama into it. I'm posting the rework here.

Hi, I think these are absolutely great.  Love the variety.  JT32 you are absolutely right, I'm also checking in alot more and looking for another painted challenge... can't wait for the next one!

Priti - you outdid yourself with some great bold colours... love the free style you are developing. Barb - glad you finally posted...  this is really nice - very mellow.  Nancie - very nice - don't know why... bit I really like the leaf (right hand corner)... so well done.  SCochran - great pastels - almost looks like oils - like the loose techniques. ;>

Well, here is mine.  I am not going to get any more time to paint this week.   I am slowly getting used to painting on the hard board - slowly (I think I prefer canvas - gives and doesn't use so much paint and medium!)

Kassie - looking forward to Challenge #5!    JT32 - did you want to do Challenge #6?

Each piece I see has it own personality, just as the artist the produced them. Looking forward to the next one.... Happy painting, Shana

Ditto on the "Wow!" Every painting just makes me stop & look. I'm so glad everyone enjoyed painting this photo as much as I did (I worried when I picked it I'd be the only one doing it. LOL)

Maggie - I like your vase. You captured the reflections in it so well.

Bill - your oils are so elegant. I love your rendition.

Looking forward to the next one. With Thanksgiving next week, I'm going to be a bit short of time - but will give it my best. I love these challenges!

Hi Nancie,  I really like what you did with the values.  The smaller sunflower is now definitely the focal point ...it glows and it is right there in "golden section."  Great painting.

Maggie,  Your painting is so warm...I can feel the sun on the flowers.  I really like how you treated the background...I found that one of the harder things about this challenge.

Bill, You captured the same scene in cool tones..it is wonderful.  And I like how you lost the edges on the two back flowers.

Bravo to all.

Maggie,
Challenge #5 is all I can manage right now. I have lots of pics but it takes me too long to decide. Give someone else a turn. I'll probably post Sunday night. In fact because of the holiday. I think I'll post saturday night.
