Hi Everyone,

I took this picture canoeing up Santa Elena Canyon on the Rio Grande.  Mexico is on the left and the cave is known as "Smuggler's Cave."  I hope that you all enjoy painting it.

Leon

Nice picture, Leon.
I've been tied down with family matters, but I hope to chip in soon.

Okay, here is mine.  I will not have any more time to paint this week so here it is... my version of the Canyon.   I have to say, this was one of the hardest ones I've done.  Had to search books on 'how to' many times over!  If nothing else, these challenges are good to bring one out of their 'comfort zone'.  Ouch!   Can't wait to see everyone else's.

I love your interpretation, Maggie. I guess you found the right books.

Maggie - you got in there first again! I love the softness in your work. Your colors blend so nicely. I'm posting mine now as well as I won't get time later. I tried something different - it's acrylic still, but on a 9 x 12 canvas sheet. Never tried these before, and they are a bit different. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's work. -Nan

Okay, I hope this works.  I am having trouble getting my file size to 100 KB.  This was a beautiful scene...I loved doing it ...and it was indeed a challenge.  This is soft pastel on 8x10 Meitints.  Hope the upload works.

Nancy, You did a wonderful job bringing the sunlight into the painting. And I like the reflections and the shimmer on the water.
Barb, It looks good. A little bit small. I haven't zeroed in on the size myself. I'm always surprised when I see it appear. Look forward to seeing more of your paintings.

Maggie, beautiful as usual. Nancie, you work the medium very well (acrylics) - I love all the reflections in the water. Barb, i like the way you composed all the main lines to point towards the entrance of the cave/ center.

Hello Everyone,

Here is my offering for Challenge #3. It is a 8.5 x 11 oil on canvas. This was a real struggle. I could see myself painting on this for at least another month. But I had to tell myself to move on.

I think the others are really great. Nancy, the rocks on the left side are oh so realistic. Great job.

This looks like a great challenge Leon and everyone's paintings look great. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to participate in this one or any for the next few weeks. Every two or three years I get what are called cluster headaches (very bad) 3-4 times a day for about 5 or six weeks, then they're gone again. Well, this time, I found a preventative medicine. I call them stupid pills because that's exactly what they do to me. I can still paint but what would normally take me a day to paint now takes me a week or more and just typing a coherent sentence is difficult. ......so don't forget about me, I'll be back when I'm not stupid anymore.

Brian - don't worry, we won't forgot.. in fact, whenever you are ready... we are still here and with more challenges.  Hopefully you will jump in - as comments are always welcomed.

Ron great job - it is a challenge for one week - I think it is hard to do it all in one week, but it does get the juices flowing.

Barb - well done with the rock face on the lefthand side - especially the top portion. I'm gonna need lessons soon!

Nancy - great job for someone who has never used acrylics before... very nice.

Wonder what is in store for next week!!!

Maggie

Hi everyone, I couldn't wait to get home tonight & check online. The work from everyone is wonderful. And all the different media being used, gives so many different 'takes' on the subject. Maggie & Ron, your work is wonderful as usual. Maggie's soft blending is so soothing, and Ron, I love your water detail & reflections. Welcome to Barbara, and your pastel rendition is so unique. I had never worked pastels (intimidating to me, at least right now). And Shana - I love your colors and strokes, it's what I love so much with oil paints. Brian, a speedy return and much relief sent to you - I have friends with cluster headaches, and they can be just awful. And Leon - thank you for such a wonderful image to paint! I'm sure more will add their work - the night is not over yet!

I volunteered for the next week's challenge, and I struggled with what image to select. I explored all over Wet Canvas, and tagged so many favorites. Some, obviously, are too involved to spend only a week on - and to do them any justice. Anyway, I did select one and I will start a new thread with the image & link to the larger one online. Happy painting to all!

Thanks for all the encouragement and welcoming a pastelist into your midst!  All the entries are great and they are in many ways so different.  I am in awe of you guys that work in oil and acrylic.  I've done a little in each and loved oil but it took so long that I looked for something quicker and then tried acrylic and was confounded by how quick it was!!!  So Pastel is my medium I guess.

Maggie, I think the way you made the cave entrance the lightest area really draws the viewer's eye.

Nan,  I love the reflections in the water and your colors.

Ron,  I like the lightness of your distant cave ...it almost makes the reflected cave the focal point....really adds to the mystery.

Shana, I like the freedom of your brush strokes and very impressionistic palette.

This was a great challenge Leon.  I am looking forward to #4!
