Hi Richard, Who is the lady to you? What size canvas? I can see the drawing behind the painting was well thought out. I think it needs a little more modeling in the face, softening the light into the shadow, in the cheeks and the chin. Kathy |

| Hi Richard - I like the way you did the folds of the shirt and of course the bright colour is great. The only suggestion would be the left hand side of the face, the shadows indicate it goes into the mouth too abruptly. She is lovely. |

Hi Richard, Since the lady is your wife, I wonder if I should be cirtical, but I will in the good spirit of art. I presume that you did this from a photograph that was taken with Flash light on the camera. This would account for the flat look. Since you have your subject at becken call, why not sit her down someplace where you can have a single source light set high at a 45 degree angle so that you can have some beatiful modeling and shadows and then take a photo or paint from your live model. You may have captured the likeness but the face is flat. It has no dimension. I hope that my suggestions don't affend. These are little things that I have learned from takeing classes in portrait painting. Keep painting. |

| Hi Phil,
You are referring to Painters light. When i was teaching I always
told my students to use a single source side light because it gave
form. I usually always use a a side light but my wife looked so vibrant in this front light I decided to paint it that way.
Here is an early portrait of my wife in Painter's light.

| Richard as always... I love it. I like the silouette look on this second one. Really stricking. |
