| I need input on this one. This is rendered from photos taken at mid day. Unfortuantely, it looks flat. I tried to bring in some dimension with the tree limb coming toward the viewer, but it still looks flat. I am toying with the idea of doing something with the forground shadows in the order of Monet's dappled style. Anybody with some experience in that, please jump in here and help me out. Thanks bunches! |

I like this very much. Suggestion If you were to darken the grass in the front and the bottom of the tree trunk in front, it would look like your were looking down into a cove. I like your selection of colors. Kathy |

| Hi JAlida - I'm by far not experienced in landscapes, but I would suggest on the bank heading down to the water, place a bit more darkness, for indents, rocks etc. I think it would make the water below stand out a lot more. Great picture though. The water looks great. |

| Beautiful work, there isn't much to change. Both Kassie and Maggie made great suggestions. I think the sky could be a bit lighter/whiter just above the sand dunes, that might make the trees come forward. |

Nice painting. In addition to the good ideas above I'd suggest:
1. While lightening the sky, lower the horizon to the 1/3 line and bring more sky into the painting to let the trees stand out more.
2. Reduce the intensity of the blue in the water to push it back. It's now competing with the trees. |

| Thank you all for your suggestions. I will work on this and show you what comes out. In the meantime, I thought you might like to see what I had to use as reference photos. |

| I've read all of the suggestions and I personally think that you should leave it as is. It has an Japanese flavor. I love the softness and delicacy of the piece. If you harden any of the colores in the forground, you'll destroy the dreamy quality of the painting. It doesn't have to look like the real thing to be beautiful. |

| Okay. Here is the new version. Changing the water color definitely improved the depth. While dabbling, I emphasized the highlights on the nearest limbs and added the geese to help fill in the empty area. What do you think? |

| Looking great. I like the highlights of the little tree in front. I find this really brings the painting together and your eye towards the middle. It looks and feels like you have more movement in the water. Great job. |

| Thank you both. Bill's suggestion to soften the water color did the trick for this piece. I am much happier with it now. I think I have also managed to retain the softness that "eyecandy" enjoyed. Amazing what a couple of little dabbs of paint can do, isn't it? That's why we all keep doing this, I guess. My sincere thanks to everyone who helped me with their suggestions! |

| HI jAida,
I played with some temporary image settings and brought up the contrast and played with some colors to match the photos you had on your post. I particularly like that mustard color in the foreground (reminds me of a Bill Hosner color for water). The horizon line on the water is more defined - it might be serving to flatten your image but just an alternative interpretation. See what you think. I wasn't entirely sure what the focal point was. I tried to keep the contrast higher on the log, small tree, and nearest tree. Not as good as paint but it is fun to play !
I always worry about altering images because it means I am rudely inserting my own interpretation on what is a personal expression but I feel that when people are posting for critique, alteration of the image is a good way to provide a few alternatives. Let me know if you would like me to tweak anything else.
Tx,
Bruce
