Oil on board

I want to try to make a christmas card this year. These figurines have survived dogs, cats, children and grandchildren.

How does it look as card?

Hi Bill,
I like your selection of figures. They have a personal-homey feel. If you are going to use them on a card they should have stronger values—brighter lights and darker shadows, so they hold up in printing. Especially between the hats and the background.

This is precious ...original....and unique..It is a winner......

Have you ever used the splatter technique for snow falling??? I can tell you how to do that and it would add even more charm...Bill

Kassie .. you're right about the printing. I've had to go to glossy stock to get a crisp image.

No. I'd love to learn

I agree with Kassie.....these figures are great, but they almost get lost a little in the background. I think making the background darker will make the highlights in the figures really stand out. Nice work Bill!

cute idea with the Hummel figurines. I would turn the fiddler the other way so we can see the face and the fiddle; the face on the other figure is so sweet/cute.  also adding some detailed snowflakes and spatter snow would be a good addition, filling the empty space. or how about an olde style lamp post with a gas flame illuminating the figures!!!!! Don't mind me, I've had too much Coke Zero to drink!!! charl  P.S. when you say oil on board, do you mean canvas board or actual wood?

Bill what I did on the Winter Windmill I posted recently....I take the painting outside and set it on the ground, (in this case we have a fire pit with a bunch of wood in it, so I actually set it on that as it raises it little and I have a (very inexpensive splatter brush) from Michaels or AC Moore....I make a wet mixture of white paint in a paper cup, and take a little brush and brush the paint onto the splatter brush. I would advise practicing a bit before you try it at first so you get the feel for the right direction to twist it, and the right amount of paint to use. Once you get the hang of it it is very easy, and looks great...

I guess I didn't finish. (doh) I stand up straight....above the canvas, not bent over, hold my arms out in front of me, and then the splatter is tiny and spreads the majority of the area with a pretty even amount of tiny drops...

Hope this makes sense... Here is a photo of the splatter brush...

It's not canvas board. It's a wood composite called MDF- 1/4" thick. I buy it at Home Depot for about $5 for a 2'X4' sheet and cut off pieces as I need them. Much cheaper and easier to use than canvas.
It's not recommended for pieces over 36" since it might warp at that size.

Bill, this is great! And original. Your friends and family will be delighted to receive this.
(Also, I've used an old toothbrush for spattering.)

Thank you for your kind words.
I have two red headed grandsons about this age and they play the violin (sort of) so this was a lot of fun to paint.
