Everytime I think I want to give up on portraits, I come across one which I'm anxious to start... Here is my latest attempt - a child's portrait for a friend. Note - I had changed the background about 3 times from dark browns to light purples and the flesh tones from darker to much lighter giving it a more angelic look. I think the right shoulder needs to be worked on but any comments welcome and suggestions even more welcome.

Actually, I think you've done an excellent job. You don't want it to look like a photo. The only thing I would suggest is that you bring your background colors all the way up to the subject. Right now you have a light halo around her. You could even make the background a little darker to really pop her out, but the halo is a distraction. Keep up the good work. I've not had a lot of time to paint lately, but I've been checking in on and off to see what's going on and I've seen you making a lot of improvement. You are doing a good job and gaining experience and confidence. Keep it up. Peggy |

| Thanks Leon and Peggy. I get lost when I find a painting I wish to paint. In looking more at this one, I agree about the halo. It's funny how you think you are finished but when you step back there is so much more to do. I realized once I posted the back shoulder needs to be widened, the hair on the left hand side should not come down too much, more contrast on the hair, the right eye corner needs to be defined and the lid adjusted a bit more, the bottom lip and the space between the two front teeth... (I feel tired already! haha)..after that.. I think it might be a go? I guess one knows when one is finished when they can't find anything else to do... but then again... I don't want this to be a photo either. How do YOU know when you are finished? Enjoying the feedback tremendously. |

Very nice Magi! You've captured the 'moment' in this painting very well... Mike |

| Thanks Mike - because this is a commissioned... I sent an email of the painting to the soon to be owner to see if it I'm on the right track or it needs to be tweeked more... this is the part which I find I get nervous... the acceptance! Gulp. Here are the changes with all the suggestions... (I will add a few stray hairs when it dries a bit to give it a bit more messy look...) |

Looking GREAT, Magi!!! I have one small suggestion though...on the bottom of the painting I feel that her body ends abruptly. Maybe you could either blend it out further or soften the edges a bit? I love this piece! The background colors are great and the lighting on her is excellent. Don't give up on portraits, you're very good at them!!!! Mike P.S. I totally understand the 'acceptance' thing...I'm sure that they will love this! |

Maggie You are moving forward nicely with your work. Just keep painting what you see and the acceptance will take care of itself.
How do YOU know when you are finished? I asked the art director of a large magazine that question. His answer: "When I run out of time"

Thanks Bill, Mike suggestion taken and it looks so much better. I am finally finished. This one almost painted itself... don't you just love it when that happens (few and far inbetween), but it does make me want to do more portraits.
