Oil on board 9X12

This is the first self portrait that I've done probably since college some 20 years ago.  I had a lot of fun doing it.  I want to do more work from life, but it's hard to find a model.  I don't like how my portraits come out when I paint from a photo.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Any comments or criticisms on this piece will be appreciated!

This is stunning. I love it. I have never done a portrait from a live model. I must now try!

Maggie, judging from your photo, you have made your features too sharp and too severe. Your eyes seem to pop as if you had a hyper thyroid condition. Work on it some more. You are much prettier than this.

Hi Krista,
A very interesting self portrait. It triggers a memory of a similar style that I can't quite put my finger on. Oh well, I may be all wrong about that. At my age I forget a lot of very little. I like this painting. I hope to see more of your art now that summer is here and school is out.

This is very nice! My picture of you looks kind of fuzzy with a lot of squares, kind of like a chuck close. I don't know if it is my computer, or your photo. Wondering if your eyes are that blue? I like the blue tho. Very nice portrait. I like painting in life also. After all, why copy a photo,, what's the point?
Good job.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the comments!
Snowartist - I don't know why the picture came out all pixilated, all the little squares you were talking about. They are not supposed to be there. I probably exaggerated the blue of my eyes a bit. I've been working on it and have toned them down. I will post it again when I'm done, and hopefully the photo will be much better. I am no photographer, that's for sure!
Thanks again to Maggie, Phil, Leon and Snowartist, I appreciate the comments. -Krista

Well, I finally got around to finishing this.  Please let me know what you think - comments and criticisms welcome!  I hope the picture comes out better than the first one.  I need to learn more about photographing artwork.

Krista - this is great. I love it. It is very dramatic. I like the purple background. Your hair turned out well and the eyes are softer. Even though I liked the first one... this is 100% richer.

Very nice. UM,,,,I like the first one better tho. Sorry. You seem to have lost your values. First one has more values, more depth. Both are nice tho. Thanks for posting and sharing with us.
