18 x 16 - Canvas - Oils

Just finished this landscape.  I do find landscapes one of the hardest for me to do and I can prove this by the many unfinished canvases in my studio!

I did enjoy doing this one which is unusual for me. It kinda painted itself.  I am hoping I have found 'my style' of painting landscapes.  I now have to figure out how to do trees (any suggestions) without them looking like 'blobs of color' as I will be starting another landscape with a couple of horses.  Any comments, suggestions or 'tricks of the trade' is more than welcome.

This is very nice. I'm taking my first oil class and really find it hard to handle, as opposed to my usual pastels. I really like the gold fields in front of that deep red barn. And I love those old barns! There are lots of books that have suggestions for painting trees. Just look in your local library.............I'm sure you'll find one.

Thanks Gene - I do like landscapes and yes barns, covered bridges etc. I do have several books, but I still find it very hard to do 'real' trees, close up grass, ground, hay - all the things which one needs to put into the landscapes. If I really try to work on each blade of grass or leaf on a tree - it starts to look funny! Ouch. I like blending which is how I did the one here. I guess it is practice, practice, practice. My new one has a couple of horses and of course a barn in the back, with hay, and all the things I have trouble with - it should be interesting!

Hi Maggie! This is nice. I like the colors and contrast in this. As far as ideas on tress...I find that over working them is very easy to do! Just remember not to putz with them, leave them loose and open. Also, let the BRUSH do the work as far as details. Pushing and bending a brush makes wondeful grass and just dabbing a small brush makes great leaves. Just some ideas...

Hi Maggie, You also might want to think about masses of color and value and think about where your light source is coming from. You've done a super job with the barn and sky, but you might want to add more contrast in the trees and ground. Maybe keep these things in mind on your next one. You are well on your way, and it's like you said - practice, practice, practice! - Krista

maggie!
I'm very impressed with this painting. The barn is very well done. a good balance of detail and color. I could add no advice beyond what was said above. I think this is my favorite of all that I have seen of your paintings.
sincerely,
Robert

Thank you Mike, Theriot and Krista - Love the feedback. I will work a bit more on the trees (maybe a bit more bolder colours) and light source as you suggested Krista and maybe work a bit more on the grass to make it stand out a bit. I'll try to work on it this weekend.

Very nice painting. Block out the sky and look at your painting. I like it better with that blue gone. Not sure why. Very nice barn, and the golden glow is nice.
