This is 20 x 34 Oil on Canvas. The subjects are my daughter and grand daughter. The painting was made from 4 x 6 photograph as my model. Mother was getting her daughter ready for graduation. Any suggestions? |

Phil - this is really nice work. I love your style of painting. As a suggestion from a non-pro, the painting in the back tends to want too much attention. I would soften it down a bit and make it more of the background. Otherwise. I love it. |

Very nice, Phil!!! One thing I see in this is that your daughter's (mother) skirt looks flat to me, and I agree with Maggie on the the background as far as drawing attention away from the subjects. Mike |

Nice work, only thing that bothers me is that the painting in the background seems to be hanging skew, but thats me I'm always straightening them.
Maybe slightly softer but I don't really know because have seen some old masters paintings with similar backgrounds.

Hi Phil, I've seen old masters with paintings on the wall (in fact I'm doing one in my latest painting). If you take it away it will lose balance. Why not subdue the white inset in the frame and subdue the face and neck piece. As far as the mother's skirt being flat, it reminds me of a clingy skirt. I can just picture the mother picking up static electricity from the friction of combing her daugher's hair. Kassie

I agree the skirt looks a little flat, deepening the shadowing on both mom and daughter would give more depth. I also want to straighten the picture! Nice work! tracy |

| Very nice painting. Love the jacket! Has a beautiful feel to it! Only thing I see, is maybe the edges on the hair, might be a little hard. Good job. |

I like this picture. About the shadows--try holding it up to a mirror. That always helps me. Of course, sometimes, I see some things I hadn't noticed before and wish I hadn't. It's a good painting as is. Your painting has personality. It would fit comfortably in any one's home. Kathy

| The mother is wearing slacks, not a skirt, and they do hang straight down. I suppose they might use a little more modeling. As for the picture on the wall, the top of of the painting stood away from the wall an so it may appear skewed. I guess that it is a little bold and could be supressed, but it was an important prop for the subjects in the painting. I do thank you all for your comments and will head some of them. It was fun doing this painting my grand daughter has laid claim to this painting. You people do a wonderful job with your critiques. |

| Phil, this is great. I, too like having the painting in the background as is. However, IF the window and the painting are on the same plane (wall), it may be that the lines of the window are off (Right now it looks to me that it is on another wall around the corner). Compare the horizontal line of the bottom of the painting to that of the bottom of the window and then move your eye upwards on the window. See how you've created several angles? I bet they are a bit more parallel than you have them shown. This is indeed a family treasure. |
