ok, I know that you can put acrylics under oil, but is there a limit of how much. Could I put several layers of acrylic underneath and still put oils on top?

Thanks.

I have another question, how long should I let pretty thick oil paint dry before I do detailed oil work? does it matter? will it stick differently?
Or should I stop asking questions and try by experiment?
Anyway thanks.

i dont use acrylics under oils but what i know you can have multiple layers under there. how thin are you applying the acrylics layers? is the acrylics you use b4 the oil part of your underpainting? as for the detail: if i have a heavy oil layer i usually wait till it is just dry to the touch, unless im working form wet to wet then i wait till it has that tackey feel to it.

also ask as many questions you want that is what a forum is for.

hope this helps

In the first place most of us paint on canvases that are primed with acrylic gesso so we start out painting oils over acrylics. I frequently color my canvas with a layer of acrylic coloring over the gessoed canvas. And last but not least, I've often finished an acrylic piece with oils in areas where I could do a better job with oils. I too have questions about the practice and they are: will the painting last as well over acrylic: will the painting be more likely to craze or crack in time and will fungus be more likely to invade the canvas. I also wonder about transporting the canvas. I in a hot truck and something such as wrapping touches the surface of a warm or hot painting, will it leave an imprint on the acrylic surface?
I guess only time will tell the effects of mixing acrylics with oils. I woujld like to hear an expert on the subject

Thank you everyone!
What I want to do is put layers of acrylics under oils so that I don't have light patches under dark oils, it really ruins what I try to do! So from what everyone has said, sounds like I'm safe trying it without wasting a canvas. Once agian, thank you all!

P.S. an expert might still be interesting to hear from.
