Hi - It's been a while but I have not given up on portraits.  I do love the style of Bill Mahler's (large brush strokes with commitment) or Carver's (absolutely stunning) but these styles do not come naturally to me - thus, here is another attempt of my own style of portrait.  Comments welcome.

Maggie, You did very well. You did a good job capturing her expression.

Maggie I think the likeness is terrific, I like the color of your outfit and think it perfect to make your portrait a bright lively one!
This is an interesting forum, why so little action on here, doesn't seem to be a lot of participation.

Beatuful work Maggie. The only thing I am wondering is there seems to be a bit of flatness between her and the background; however, there seems to be a slight camera flare, so I don't know if the flatness is from the camera itself. I would love to be able to do portraits this well some day.

Shrl, I don't come here as often mainly because this forum is so slow to move from posting to posting. I have limited time to skim through my various forums. This is the slowest one of them all. Otherwise, I would be here more often and post comments more often.

Wishing you peace and prosperity,
Naomi

the only thing i would say is that the shape of the hat is wrong. looks like you rendered it to big. also i would add a leeetle more contrast. this will espacially make it look more 3d.

other than that a good likeness.

well done.

You've almost got it right. You need more modeling and a little more red in the cheeks. The mouth is not quite wide enough. The hair needs some work. It looks like strings from a mop. Look at your photo and notice how the colors of the hair vary with dark areas and bright highlights. You're on the right track. Jusst do some more work and capture what is in the photo.

Hi Maggie,
I'm glad to see that you haven't given up on portraits. This is a very recognizeable painting. As Robert said above you have captured her expression, especially about the eyes. Are you still doing the black and white for value study? Please post some more portraits. I enjoy seeing each new painting that you do.

Thanks for your comments everyone.  I have not been here for some time, busy painting, but really miss you guys.  Love the comments.  Here is what was "was" the final version of Bright Eyes until I read the comments.

I did try to work from the B/W version but still felt a bit lost on the shadings.  I guess I need alot more practice.  I was a bit scared to mess up what I've done sofar (I have to get over this and go for it!).  I know in the B/W photo it marked alot of the darker spots under the eyes etc., but I really didn't want to make it any darker (what woman does!!) but I did work a bit more on the hair, and need now to concentrate maybe on the mouth etc.  I will try to add a bit more shading in the hair colours.  Thanks everyone for your comments - you make each of my paintings that much better!  Honest!

I really like what you've done. I think you've done a super job working from a photo. I have a real hard time with that. Sometimes when people work from a photo their paintings have a certain quality that I can't describe, but I don't like too much either (my own always look weird). This painting does not have that look. I like how you have left parts to appear less dementional than others, like the scarf and jacket. It makes the face stand out. I also love the texture of the background. It compliments the rest of the work. You should be very proud of this!
