14X14 Oil on Board

I'm trying to shift from portraits to other subjects for a while, but this subject just kept putting his narcissitic nose in the way.

At my age, you can't do a progressive series, so this is the portrait of the artist, period.

My wife says the likeness is pretty good. My hands really are that large, but this pose accentuates them, doesn't it?

I realized mid way thru that the size was too small to get any detailed features, so I had to be satisfied with getting the values and large shapes the best I could.

The painting is lighter than the foto.

The red collar is genius. Whereas the sweater could easily have stolen the show, the red immediately brings my eye to the face. The value shifts work extremely well in the face and the facial contours read beautifully.

I don't think you need the brightness of the earpiece from the spectacles. IMO, that's the only flaw I see.

The hand on the left is well done, however, the hand on the right looks unfinished.

Bill,
I love the looseness of your portraits and this one is no different. As a self-taught beginner I am learning by looking at your work. I paint very tight but want to learn to loosen up. How were your paintings looking when you first started? Were they tight or loose? Is this looseness a result of focused effort or is it that you are more relaxed and confident? And...How can I develop my skill this way? Or...should I stay with my strengths.

Nice work Bill as usual.
Hope this isn't the last one you do.
No one is really happy with work of themselves.
Especially if it is done by themselves.

This is one of my first paintings, done during the early 60's. I don't see much difference in my style now, so I must have been painting this way naturally.

Your style is distinctive and personal and I see no reason why you should change it.

What an outstanding portrait, painted beautifully and yes the hands do look a little large but as you said they are that big. That sweater must have been a big challenge, and the color red peeking out at the neck is perfect. Do you think a darker background might enhance your portrait some?

Your earlier portrait - thought I was looking at  Connery! Handsome devil you are!
