Here goes! I've been watching and commenting for 2 weeks now. I guess it's time for me to introduce my pictures. This one is an 8x10 oil on canvas board. I have been painting in watercolors for the past 5 years and only recently switched back to oils. I love oils. The background on this painting is a problem. Especially the grass. I look forward to hearing your comments. Kassie

Kassie Well, you finally put your toe in the water! Welcome. This has a nice pastoral feel to it. The background is working well for me. If I had to make a suggestion it would be to select one bloom... I'd use that large one on my right, leave it as is, and then use tha background color to soften and de-emphasize the others.

| I love the way you have done the flowers. My only suggestion would be to maybe change the color of the background at the top of the painting because it is so similar to the leaves of the flowers. The browns in the lower right hand corner are a nice contrast. It might make the flowers stand out more. |

Yes, I can agree with Krista , or just bring some of the bottom colours of the background into the top.
It would look something like this, just roughly done in Photoshop.
Nice work on the flowers.

Sorry, I didn't get back to you for awhile. I was working on a portrait for my son and decided I wanted to enter is in the 25th…competition. So I crunched to finish it in time.
Here's the best I could do with your suggestions for my peonies. Bill, Mentally, it was really hard to dull the three peonies. I tried, but maybe they should be duller. Retha, I knew I wasn't going to get it as nice as the background you demontrated. I think I got it too dark. Kassie

| Wow! I think it looks great! The flowers really pop out now, especially the biggest one since you toned down the others. I love the texture of the background you created. Beautiful work! - Krista |

Kassie your peonies are beautiful, I love the colors and the way they are painted, but I think the background should be more of a contrast to make the flowers really pop. I'd make it a little darker. Flowers must be your love in and out of painting, is gardening one of your loves? |

My preference is painting people in scenes. But when I just gotta paint and I don't have a good scene to work on, I paint flowers. As to backgrounds, lately I haven't been able to get rid of the shine that appears on oils. The background on this is Burnt Umber, a touch of Ultra…Blue, with a little white. In life it has a good contrast. Thanks for your observations. Kassie
