I got this exercise from Linda Cateura's book-
David Leffel - Oil Painting Secrets of a Master
Just a few colors, almost identical layout.

The idea is to show the transparency of the grape vs the solidity of the cherry by shifiting colors and values.

The idea is Leffel's but the rendering (sigh) is not quite the same as his!

Bill - Great idea and looks like a good exercise. The grape looks delicious.

Hi Bill...I think these are great...love your fearless and yet subtle use of color...and free hand...also this exercise it seems would lend itself to making you 'look' harder at things to see if you are getting the effect you really want.

Bill, I love these!
Your work shows classic style to it, and is what painting in oils should be....BRAVO!

Thank you all for looking and commenting.
These were fun to do, just 4X4 each. My wife snared them for the kitchen and they're at the framer already.
A nice feature of painting on board is that you have these little odd pieces around for things like this.
I commend that book. There are parts that I can't quite understand yet, but there are sections like this that are immediately helpful.

Your work Sir, reminds me of the Masters. It is some of the finest on this forum. Viewing your work opens my eyes and my mind and makes me believe that there are still painters in this world.

Thank you for your encouraging words.
Think the only thing I'd rather be called than a painter is Grandpa!
