I hadn't planned to post this, but today I saw the post "sunset at 20000 feet" by mksarts and thought the coincidence was too much to let go.
When I was coming back from Polynesia in 2006, and the plane was flying right along the terminator line, I looked out the window and saw pretty much what's in the painting. Like Marianne, I made a note of the colors and resolved to paint what I saw later. It seemed to me that yellow was skipped, it went from deep red to orange-red to orange to light orange to green. The other thing I noticed was how intense the red was nearest the horizon.
I decided to give the horizon some curvature. It probably wasn't as curved as this--after all, I wasn't in the space shuttle or anything--but my intent was to make this a semi-abstract, so I exaggerate the curve a bit.
The white dot in the upper-left quadrant is Venus.
Mine is 12x16 on a panel. The actual title is "Coming Home," but I'd also thought of calling this "Dawn at Thirty-Seven Thousand Feet." I also think it could be called "Two Planets." |
