This is an expeiment for me. It isn't my style, but I wanted to try something different. I took a cheap canvas mounted on board and used a palatte knife to apply Golden's Molding Paste which I then allowed to dry for a day. I then set out to do an oil painting without using a brush or palatte knife. I applied the paint with a rag covering my finger. (You might call it "finger painting"), but I call it rag painting. I wanted to create a loose and dreamy feeling with soft colors. This is what the painting looks like now, and, you know what? I am not capable of evaluating it since I have never done anything like this before. Help! Should I proceed with this style or forget it!

Phil, I'd call it a success. I like the texture and the mood it creates, along with the bright happy colors. Can you maybe define the face a little more so it doesn't blend in with the background? Although I'm not qualified to critique this style, if it helps to know that someone likes it, I do. I say do another one and see what happens. |

| Phil - this looks like fun. It is airy and quite dreamy. My sister does 'finger painting' with oils and it is quite interesting. I like it too. Keep it up. It is nice to see something different such as rag painting. |

this is really fun. one question- the acrylic mediums i have all say not for use with oil paints, but i guess that means mixing, b/c you should be able to paint over them just like you can go over acrylic paint with pil, right? never thought about it, but it opens up all sorts of possibilities. |

| You may use any acrylic media or paints and once dry, you can paint with oils over the acrylic, but you can't paint acrylic over oils. As you know, most of the gesso used on prepared canvas is acrylic gesso and you may use almost any media over the acrylic gesso. I hope that I make myself clear. |

| Very nice. This is how I have been doing my Emotions series. I mix the Golden Modling paste with gesso. I may put different layers on and use different tools to get different textures. My Love painting I used a tooth brush. I let it dry and put one or two more coats of only gesso over the textured molding/gesso ground. Then once it is all dry, I then paint over it with oil. |

I think you have a great start there. However, I would incorporate some depth in this picture, and you can do that by letting it dry and putting in darker tones , pushing the paint with your little finger nail and sort of pushing and shaping the paint onto the canvas where you want shadow, etc. to give some dept. Now this works for "kids finger paints, " but I have never tried this with oil.
I love finger painting and one of my favorite artist of today happens to be Mary Ann Brandt. She has a wonderfull collection at www.fingerpainter.com. You might get some ideas from her work. She is strickly fingers/arms/wrists, etc. |

Hey Guys, Thanks for all of the interest. It was a fun experiment for me. I haven't had time to do another. I'll wait till I have a lull in ideas to paint. At the present, I've been busy painting in my usual style, some of which I have shown here. I have trouble being so loose in style. I've tried doing abstracts but no luck. I just haven't had a success with it, so I'll stick to what I do best. This form can take you back to your kindergarden days! |
