Hello everyone, this is my first post. This painting measures 18"x24" oil on stretched canvas. It is also my very first portrait. I have been studying (with great difficulty) mixing skin tones. I feel that using an umber or sienna straight out of the tube for skin tones, tends to look to "dull." SO, I created the tones for this painting by mixing Ultramarine Violet, Cadmium Scarlet, Cadmium Lemon, while highlighting and blushing with Titanium White and Permanent Rose. The seem to mix to a very luscious and rich looking skin for a black female. Any comments are very welcome, suggestions, critiques.

Lovely and really like the skin tone for her. I'm sure the client was
very pleased.

Hi Vanessa - very nice.  I do like the skin tones as this is one area I always have a bit of difficulty.  Your techniques for the clothing is really nice also - the folds in the dress and the colors.  Very beautifully done.  It feels rich and silky.

Vanessa, I think you're right on with the skin tones, and this is your first? You're pretty amazing.
Just a little side note, one thing that caught my eye is that her earring leans back. I think gravity would have it hanging straight down.
I like how you created texture on the background. It's a nice contrast to her smooth skin.

Thanks everyone...yes Kim I totally agree about the earring thing...now that I look at it It looks like it's being windblown in a slight breeze or something.

Amazing work Vanessa.
Your skin tones are excellent. Dark skin is
very difficult to do. You have done an excellent job.

I think the earring works ok though...it could be light weight enough to have lain against her skin and stayed back.

Lovely painting.

Beautiful. I especially like the background - it works very well with the figure. Fantastic for your first portrait!
