Hi Everyone,

I started another portrait last saturday the 26th and thought that I would show you again different stages of this unfinshed painting.  Next year I plan on retiring and hope to devote more time to painting.  As it is now I have to get up early in the morning to paint if I'm going to get anything done.

Pretty amazing for early in the morning!

Keep it up...you'll grow even more when you don't have to watch your clock so much...and you can get in a flow and stay there longer!

This is great.  I like the idea of showing the painting as you go along.  I too am hoping to at least semi-retire in 4.49 years (but who is counting) to do more painting on the side.  Looking forward to your next step.  How much time do you spend painting in the morning?  Anxious to see the next one.

Hi Everyone,

Here are some more stages I've gone through with this painting.  Maggie, I spend about 90 minutes painting in the morning 3 to 4 times a week, 90 minutes is about all I can effectively do without a break that preferablely involves excercise.  That doesn't mean that I don't paint at other times during the day.  On my days off I may spend a day painting off an on during the day.  Interesting that the length of time that I can effectively paint without wearing my self down to point that I'm going around in circles is about the length of a REM cycle.

Hi Leon - looking good.  I pulled the pic into photoshop (hope you don't mind) to make it bigger - because I was interested in how you make the ears look so real.  Are you using a photo to do this?  I more question - I promise - how do you do teeth - I find it so hard to get the right colour to use.  When I try this them seem to come out looking like 'wooden painted' teeth! ouch.

Thanks Maggie,
I’m flattered that you would want to run my paintings through photoshop. This painting still has a way to go before I’m finished with it and that could be anywhere from three to five more painting sessions (I for instance don’t like one of the ears). I haven’t done any portraits in at least a year, it might even be two years and in the last 30 days have started and finished three and this is the forth. I had hoped to get this one into a show tomorrow, but of course there is no way that will happen now. These portraits were based on photos that I had taken, but I thank my lucky stars that the model also happens to be my wife. Photos can really mislead you. I believe that it was in a book by Richard Schmid where I read that you get your measurements right before you start a painting. It saves a lot of redoing. I firmly believe in that. I just wish that I would follow that advice at times. As far as teeth are concerned I don’t exactly understand what problem you are having. Teeth are never pure white, but may have a touch of blue, maybe brown, or both on the same tooth. It all depends on the light falling on that subject (there could even be and probably are other hues). Anyway, thank you for your interest and comments.

Leon, wonderful work. I am not comfortable critiquing others, but I feel the nose is short for her face for some reason... I like the rest of the work, but the nose just grabs me... just my $.02

Hi Carver,

Thanks for your comment.  You have a good eye.  The nose is not too short, but there were other problems with the nose and mouth that sure make it look that way.  There are times when I think that I need to get out my Kimon Nicolides primer and go back to drawing 101.  As I alluded to in my last post it would be better to get your measurements right up front rather than down the road.  It could make for a long thread and I would like to be out of this one before next winter.  Anyway, here is another post hopefully showing this 8 x 10 painting a little further down the road and if anyone sees anything else that they want to question please feel free to do so.  It’s beginning to look like I’m going to need all the help I can get.  By the way Carver I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned it in the past, but I use to live in the Clear Lake area over on the Galveston side.  The two things I miss living out here in West Texas are sailing and fresh seafood and I don’t miss the traffic.  I would say lets get together for supper some night (if you like seafood), but I haven’t been back there but once in the last 15 years.  Have you ever been out to the Big Bend area of Texas?

Hi Leon,
This is very nice work. The steps are very helpful
in seeing how you develop a painting. The layering
of thin coats of paint is something I just don't have the
patience for. I admire someone who has the talent and
patience it takes for a piece of art to come to fruition.

Hi Everyone,

Well, I think that I’m down to one more session after this one.  This portrait is taking longer than I anticipated.  Any comments appreciated.

Leon - it looks great.  I liked seeing it in stages.  I think even though it has taken you longer than anticipated - it was worth it.

This is a very good painting. I work full-time and get up to paint for an hour or so in the mornings, as you do. It's amazing what you can get done in that time.

Nice work Leon. I see that your deditcation is paying off. You have come a long way since the beginings. The morning painting seems to be the magic trick to getting ahead.
