Looking for something to paint.  Just out of ideas, so I decided to do a self portrait.  Not having a mirror available, I took a photo of myself in a pose that I thought suitable using my D80 Digital camera mounted on a tripod and using a remote to release the shutter.
I have always felt that a portrait should tell something about the person other than a simple likeness so I was carefull to include some of the things that represent me and my personality such as the pad for note taking and pen and pencil in my breast pocket.  The expensive watch and gold bracelet on my left wrist.  Since my passion is painting I painted in a Renoir that I had just finished copying.  I used a brush in my left hand to point to the painting and the elbow of Gabriella to point back to me completing the circle.
I was careful not to flatter myself, so I did not oversoften the wrinkles in this 84 year old face.
I call my painting "Learning from the Masters".  The name of the Renoir painting is "Gabriella with Jewels.
    Tell me what you think.

Very interesting, Phil And, let me tell you, you look great for 84! Hope I can look that young when I get there. I like that you included so many of your "things" in the painting about you. One thing about the painting that distracts my eye, however, is the way Gabriella's arm rests exactly on the same line as your shoulder. Now, I imagine you did not notice that tangent forming when you took the photo, but maybe you could have changed it when you painted the painting??? I'm not sure about that, but thought I'd just mention that to you. I don't know the original Renoir painting, but somehow her arm seems too large to me, and if that were made smaller, then you could elminate it resting so squarely against your shoulder. Just a thought. I must say, I like the skin colors and the way you handled the fabric of your shirt. Thanks for posting.............Gene

Very nice 'eye candy'. You indeed look very fit for your wonderful number of years...I think the clothes look good...and you did a good job on skin colors etc. It can't be easy to paint yourself...it's better that we are looking at other people most of  the time I think. But I read once that you should put a picture of yourself as a child out where you can see it...and say nice things to him/her...

I fixed my image on 'Stand Your Ground'...you can easily see it now I think...keep up the good work!

Phyl, what a great idea (and brave one, at that!) This is beautifully done - your style, use of colors is very attractive. Great title, too. I ditto all of the comments above. You're an incredible painter.
