I love the concept, and the composition works well. You have divided the pciture plane into good proportions, and the mast of the ship is pointing the viewer forward into the painting, which I find very effective. This is a complex subject, with many elements: the sea, the ship, the sky, the birds, all of which are very compelling. The drawing and perspective are accurately done.
I would say you need to define which way the light is coming, from the left or the right or from the front. This appears to be a front-lit scene, in that there are few shadows. Even in that case, you must choose the light area and the shadow areas, and be decisive about them. Water is generally dark, usually much darker than one might first think: the waves and swells are upright planes and therefore perpendicular to the light from the sky, and therefore - darker. As the swells are upright planes, they do not reflect the blue of he overhead sky, they are either the local color of the water, or they reflect the colors of surrounding objects. Try telling yourself to make the upright planes of the water be any color other than blue - Find some excuse to get some contrast.
Be careful about too many similar sized and shaped objects. Some of the birds need to be very small, some a bit larger, some a bit lighter, and so on. They need to be very subtle markers to draw the eye, not very clearly defined.
I think you are on the way to some really good painting, it's just a process. |
