| This is from a photo I took in the Santa Fe National Forest a few weeks ago when the colors were changing. 11x14, oil on canvas. Trees have always been hard for me, so I welcome any critiques and comments in order to keep the learning process going. Many thanks. |

| Nice and peaceful Kim. makes me want to go for a walk in the road. I lived in Albuquerque for about 9 years, I miss it a lot. The shadows are especialy nice. looks like you played with the color as you moved from one side to the other. good! I would say that the top edge of the fence could be whiter. Check the photo. |

Thank you Dale for taking the time to write and lend kind words. I will check the photo for the fence. We love living here in New Mexico. We came from Texas about nine years ago and haven't looked back. If we ever had to move, we'd miss it too. |

| The reason trees are difficult for you is that trees are a difficult subject, as difficult as portraits. Aspens, with their white trunks, present particular challenges. This is a good painting, I like the shadows in the foreground, and the grass - I like the grass a lot. But there is something a little stiff about the paintiing. The trunks are straight up and down, and although aspens grow straight, there will generally be some variation within them - one leans a bit this way or that, and they grown as colonies from a single root. The main issue, however, is one of edges. Each trunk is as hard-edged as the other, and there is not enough variation between the shadowed edges of the trunks merging into the woods and the bright side emerging into the light. This is also the real problem plaguing the fence posts. See how much better the shadows and grasses read, as we drift between this form and the other without changing value so much - If you can, go out and draw and paint trees on location and avoid photos. |

I like the colors of the grass in front of the fence. I agree. Trees and sometimes grass can be a challenge. There is a time of year, when the trees are ablaze with yellow whilte leaves. A beautiful time of the year, as I recall. We use to go camping there. |

| Thank you for your comments. I've been out of town and last night I looked at the trunks and I see what you mean, although thankfully, a little more variance appears in person than on the screen. Still there could be some adjustments. I appreciate everyone taking the time to look and respond. |

| I think your trees are great, I like the balanced design youve created, Im not one to follow realism to its end, I prefer the work of art that is inspired from the real. |
